  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I make benefit decisions. There was a recent change in law which means all claimants who meet the criteria are having their benefits reviewed. In addition to this I am mental health first aider, ambassador for fair treatment and coaching champion. The extra parts of my role means I can be supported in completing my apprenticeship.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am adding to my coaching skills. I have learnt about learning styles, coaching contracts, communicating effectively. Asking open questions to support the coachee to improve and find what they are looking for. I have gained additional skills around the coaching code of ethics and how that supports my role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme and those involved in my learning have inspired my to achieve more and understand myself better. In turn this has supported me to gain more coaching skills. I have needed to adapt as mentoring has been a big part of my working life so that has been a big challenge for me. The experience I am having is fulfilling.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the program is well set out. All staff i have interacted with have been knowledgeable in the subject matter and well equipped to support me in the best way. The program for me has flowed in away and at a pace that has supported learning to stick with me.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is supporting me with my apprenticeship by allowing me to have time to complete activities. I have also been given the additional role of coaching champion, this has given me further opportunities to practice new skills and improve on the learning I have received. This is supported from the top down.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My assigned person meets with me on a regular basis, I also attend interactive virtual learning sessions. I receive prompt responses to queries and constructive feedback and guidance following work I submit. The support has been at the right level and the input is easy to understand whilst stretching me to achieve more.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The sessions I have completed have supported me in my role and my continual professional development. I have now got additional responsibilities and am approached to offer coaching in group settings along with 1 2 1 sessions. When I complete me qualification I aim to gain promotion in my chosen field.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I can complete additional voluntary training and development and have become involved in working groups to support the progression of my apprenticeship. This has included presenting information about coaching to senior leaders during International Coaching Week. I was also able to attend a session on neuroscience that was very informative.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Department for Work and Pensions to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The staff have remained professional and engaging throughout. I feel supported to achieve and have received constructive feedback. This has been by far the best learning experience I have received. All interactions are worked around my schedule and have received extra advice and guidance when I have asked for it.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Department for Work and Pensions?
  • If you engage well, the support will be there for you. The qualification will push you past your comfort zone which is a little scary, but support is there along the way. Take up any support that is offered, all the staff are professional whilst being empathetic to challenges you may have along the way.
