  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice at Marsh I work within the corporate aspect of the business as a Client Co-ordinator, where my job role is primarily acting as a form of support for the Client Advisor. This includes collecting client data, ensuring this data is correct and attending meetings to discuss each client and how the renewal for each client will take place. Upon completion of the Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship, I will be a qualified Client Advisor at Marsh.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been able to develop my communication skills both verbally and non - verbally by attending client meetings and sending emails to discuss certain matters with my colleagues. Within the first month I completed an intense training course to understand the job role and learn about the day to day systems I would be using. I understand the importance of demonstrating the highest professional standards and it has been a small challenge to learn about the correct office etiquette.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Initially I was hesitant about the Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship as I did not have much knowledge on the Insurance industry but I have been pleasantly surprised. Considering I started my apprenticeship by working from home, there has always been support available from the team and this allowed me to settle in well. There is a good balance between work and study which allows me to manage my time effectively and not fall behind in my qualification studies.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Considering my apprenticeship started by working from home, I have found that the programme has been very well structured by Marsh. I initially had a two week induction to meet the other apprentices and learn about the insurance industry. Following this I completed an intense 4 week training course where I learnt about the day to day tasks and how to carry these out.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have weekly one to one meetings with my line manager where we discuss any problems I may have experienced that week, my apprenticeship roadmap and what the following weeks structure will look like. This has enabled me to build a relationship with my manager where I feel confident enough to discuss any issues. The team who delivered the training are always available to speak to about any concerns to do with the work being given and they help to resolve these quickly.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider used at Marsh is Davies Learning Solution. I have monthly one to one sessions with a coach from DLS who discusses what I have learnt within that month and sets tasks for me to complete before the next session. If there are any issues before the next session with the coach they are always available to contact by email. Furthermore, about a month before the exams there is an intensive revision day set with DLS.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The material that I am learning for my exams has enabled me to gain a better knowledge of the insurance market and therefore I am able to understand what the team is discussing at the likes of meetings. One task I was asked to complete by DLS was to create a role portfolio. This enabled me to understand my role and ask more questions relating to the role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At Marsh there is a large emphasis on the importance of volunteering and raising money for charity. At my office I have recently been approached and asked if I would like to be the 'Charity Champion'. This role means that it is my responsibility to try and encourage the team to become involved more regularly with volunteering and charity events.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have found my experience so far at Marsh to be nothing but positive. There has been continuous support provided whether requested or not and everyone has made me feel welcome and part of the team from day one. Considering my apprenticeship started from home, Marsh have managed this well and ensured it ran as smoothly as possible.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Marsh McLennan?
  • If you were thinking about applying for Marsh I would recommend that you go for it. The application and recruitment process was easy to follow and Marsh stayed in regular contact throughout the whole time.
