I am the stand in for the operations manager. I take care of stock control, investigate shortages and discrepancies. Organise the staff and deal with problems and concerns they may have. I communicate regularly with other branches about stock and any issues they are having. I also have the responsibility of looking after the the cleaning rotas to ensure that our branch stays clean and tidy for the health and safety of all the staff.
I have a background in car parts and garages so found myself well suited to this role. I enjoy learning new things and being challenged so have leapt at new opportunities when they have arisen. This is the first training course I have taken through CPA and I believe that so far it is going well. I was reasonably quiet when I joined CPA and feel this role has help my confidence, which is an area I think I still have room to grow in.
I'm struggling to find the time to get the project done as I require the use of our works intranet and that is currently not working when logging in from home. I get to work as soon as the branch opens and work until I start but this only gives me 30 minutes to an hour. When I am doing the work I find I get a bit carried away. Add in extra slides so I can write more, I think I have near enough doubled my original outline. I have learnt some things useful to me personally also whilst doing research.
The structure is very well organised, I feel in some places things could be clearer and I need a little extra guidance, but my tutor is very friendly and helpful, just obviously and understandably very busy at this time as the corona virus struck just after taking on the course. I feel I will still be able to complete the course in time although this would be a lot easier if the information I require was available to me at home. During furlough I was able to do very little of the course and have been playing catch up since returning to work.
My employer has been nice enough to let me continue doing coursework during the first part of my work day upon occasion as he can see I am in the zone and it would be a shame to lose momentum. If I require any information that I can not source for myself using the intranet my boss does his best to hunt down the information I require to complete the task. Also I require a little time set aside once a month for a catch up with my tutor and this has not been an issue.
My tutor seems very friendly and patient, and hasn't taken umbrage with my list of questions when we have phone meetings. I have only had 2 calls from him but they were comprehensive and I was content with the answers I got. As previously mentioned access to support is less then optimal in that I am unable to access the website required to do the work from home, and therefore have to do this at work before I start.
The course has already given me so much more information then I previously had and although this information was always freely available to me I never realised before just how useful it is to know these things. So I would say that this course has been very useful to me in my job role now. Moving forward the only way for me to be able to progress in on the sales side so I would love the knowledge to give me the confidence to do this and know that I will only ever be an asset.
At the moment there are no extra-curricular activities or social activities allowed because of the corona virus and the implementation of social distancing. On the odd Saturday a staff member who isn't working will come with a grill and make everyone bacon sandwiches in the car park. Before Covid-19 we had a group bowling match with 2 of the garages we ssupply and there is of course the work Christmas meal which is always great fun.
Yes
I feel very lucky to work for genuinely nice people. I have worked for employers before that have made me dread going to work, and although there is little room for moving up and onward in this business I would suggest that people work here just because the people here are human beings, they understand that the health and well being of their staff is more important in the long run then just making people come in, hell or high water.
Judging by the phone conversations I have with other branches of CPA I feel they are much like us and are aware that we spend the majority of our lives at work and should therefore enjoy it. So I would say work hard and apply yourself but don't take yourself to seriously, we all like a bit of banter during the day and we quite often feel like a little family, which is a lovely environment to be a part of.
