  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basics I, i either tend to do bar work or waitressing. I serve customers, stock/bottle up, serve food, prep buckets, occasionally we will have to jump on pots depending on the staff we have in at the time. We aim to get food out in the best possible times but to the best standard.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned all about new beers, lagers and ales since working on the bar. I also now have an excellent understanding of all the spirits and gins we have to offer. It’s improved my mathematics skills 10 fold. It’s also learned for me to go out of my comfort zone once in a while to try new things or be set new challenges

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme knowing what the outcome can be. It gives me the boost to get my foot into the door with new things. I also enjoy how laid back it can be, no pressure is put on you as you have to juggle home life, work and also the apprenticeship

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Up to now I have only had 2 sessions so I’m not fully able to answer this. However, on my visits that I have had, they seem to run pretty smoothly. My tutors seems to be able to answer any questions I have, any problems and the work is always there in front of me ready to go.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive support (maybe not as much as we’d like) but we all do chip in together as a team. The supervisors and assistant manager always helps wherever they can. Others on the course seem to speak about their experiences which means that we can all discuss about our visit and maybe exchange notes once we get further into it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is a star! She helps me wherever I can and to the best of her ability. She helps not only herself but drafts other members in so we are getting the best possible outcome from our course. She’s very understanding and does get that we sometimes struggle time wise etc, but she never gives up.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • When our training provider is giving us a test over the recorder eg about COSH, health and safety etc, it gives us an insute into how important these things really are to have in place. When you are working, sometime you don’t think about them, but when she’s going through it with you, it gives you the nod to keep on track with them!

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have recently started doing a national quid in the pub on a Sunday night, which has really taken off. This seems to be the only thing we have really as we are more of a food oriantated pub (also a family pub) so it’s never really being one for teams etc.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Greene king has brought me out as a different person. My confidence has shot through the roof, they put us on courses to better ourselves, and give us all these difference discounts in the process! They could do better in some ways, but they always do absolutely smashing in others

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
  • -Be ready to do the best you can -Be ready for the possible courses etc that you can be out on. -You will be part of a family, not just a team (bare that in mind) -Be open to new things eg working on a bar or on waitressing (even if you’ve never done it before)
