  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am responsible in assisting the day to day running of a construction site. This involves reviewing risk assessments & method statements, reviewing the programme of works to ensure that any opportunities or risks are identified & how to enable us to achieve this. I also complete the daily site diary which will detail resources, progress, delays etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have become much more independent and responsible during the course of the apprenticeship. I now add a lot more value to my team during discussions and can complete tasks on my own. My time management has also significantly improved as well as my confidence when communicating.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the programme as I feel I am developing very well and can see a clear path of progression which excites me. I also feel very supported by not only the team that I'm working with on the project but the wider apprenticeship team within Mace as well

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is extremely well structured with a yearly training schedule emailed out to all apprentices with it being added into the calendar so that you cannot miss them. Also, the additional learning / education is clearly outlined as to begin with I completed a level 4 HNC on day release at LSBU and have since progressed onto completing my Level 6 NVQ in cosntruction management.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am very well supported by my employer as we have 6 monthly reviews to check up on my progress which is done with my line manager & a member of the apprenticeship team. I also have yearly reviews where I will present everything that I have done over the course of the year and receive feedback on ways to improve the following year.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a good amount of support from my training provider particularly when completing my NVQ 6, they were extremely helpful in supporting me when I was busy with my work and were always available to have catch ups or answer any questions that I had when working through the qualification

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The level 4 HNC helped me gain a basic level understanding of the construction industry which helped me when starting out the apprenticeship. The level 6 NVQ further developed my knowledge and helped me to gain greater responsibility within my role as it is achieved by demonstrating where you are using certain skills in your day to day and how you are able to show this.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of extra curricular activities to get involved with. On the Euston project there are plenty of volunteering opportunities working with the local community ranging from helping out food banks to talking to students studying engineering and explaining what it is that I do and how to go down a similar path. Mace offer plenty of networking sessions both virtually and in person. There is also an opportunity to play football once a week with others on the project.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As an apprentice you are very well supported by the company and made to feel like an important and valued individual that has a lot to offer. The development in terms of training and education is another aspect of Mace that really helps you as individual. Finally, the apprenticeship team is incredibly helpful as they offer support throughout your duration of the programme and are happy to answer any questions you may have or point you in the right direction of someone that can.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • When applying to Mace don't feel as though the role that you apply for is set in stone and there is no going back. They will give you plenty of opportunities to get involved with other roles if you lean into them and also offer an incredible range of working opportunities and projects if you decide to explore.
