  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as funeral arranger is to work closely with families and arrange everything from the collection of the body to the funeral itself. we also liase with families after the funeral and offer support and guidance and help them with any interment of ashes . I also manage the funeral care branch all week

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learnt lots of new skills . Mostly skills in dealing with the families and helping them at a very vunerable time in their lives. I already had a lot of empathy but my confidence in this area has grown greatly . I have also improved my computer skills a lot which has been a helpful experience

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it a lot as it is very relevant to my role. I am learning lots of new things all the time and it is nice to have the facts rather than just having to 'guess' work or phone 50 people!! Much needed training in my eyes . Lots of on the job learning

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I am quite new to the programme but so far it seems to be very well set out and managed into what I would call 'bite size' pieces . Your not bombarded with it all at once. You can work your way through it methodically and at your own pace , I like that as it makes it less stressful

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • So far so good. I have been allowed to book time out of my diary for my meetings and have been told this will be the same going forward. they want us to complete it and do well . I have been given the opportunity to go up to the hub and work at times too which gives me an insight into what goes on behind the scenes

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again so far so good, I have someone I can email with any questions and obviously there is regular meetings to go through progress etc etc. I do feel as though I could get the support if I need it which is good. I'm only a few weeks in though so time will tell!

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like it is essential in providing the facts and giving us the tools to be able to do our job properly and competently . There are many many aspects of our role that have to be completed accurately without any mistakes . We do not get a second chance at getting it right!

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No . This is one area that I feel needs vast improvements . We are very much lone workers . We speak over the phone and over email but rarely get together . Even more reason for extra- curricular activities !! It can be a very lonely job at times and having more team get together's would really improve our moral I think!

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a big company with lots of perks . The holiday entitlement is good, pension scheme is better than a lot and the hours are good too. One thing I would say is that this is not a job for everyone!! Some people might not like to work alone and also working with the deceased and their families is a huge responsibility not to be taken lightly


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • Before applying read up about the job role. there are lots of you tube videos out there to give you an insight into the life of a funeral arranger/funeral director. Take your time and think about what you could bring to the job....Your qualities . The online test isn't easy so think and take your time
