  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a general manager of a business in Greene king I deal with everything from ordering to dealing with employee relation issues. Day to day I ensure the team are following company expectations for service, safety and standards. I also ensure any company requirements are followed or put in place.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I would say that I have learnt some new skills and also developed existing skills such as enhancing the way I set out a plan. Although this is something I would normally do I feel I have a much more effective way of setting out a plan and following up with it effectively.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I haven’t yet not enjoyed a course with lifetime however the best part for me is the time spent with my regional trainer, he takes the time for me to understand the questions properly he is also very good at relating the questions to my business making it easier to answer or evidence.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The signing up process is Not very organised in my experience. There was confusion at the beginning with timings for courses and I had no clear message saying I had been accepted into the apprenticeship and only found out due to checking myself. However after 2 courses the rest of the apprenticeship is clear.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I’m not sure what support they should be giving me but I’ve not yet had a sit down conversation about my apprenticeship with any individual in Greene king. I personally don’t feel a need for it otherwise I would have asked for it my RT covers everything I need.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from my regional trainer who has made himself very approachable and available via email or phone whenever I need him. If he is unavailable he will always get back to me. The workshop classes are also what help me get the opportunity to study and complete my workbooks.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Since joining my apprenticeship I have changed pubs and out in practice some of the things I have learnt from my workshops. Also I have used my Regional trainer in making decisions in my business around the workshop books. I do feel my skills have grown since starting this apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are no extra-curricular activities available to do within Greene King. In my 3 years with the company I have not yet seen this implemented in the business. The only thing we have close to this is our yearly conference to celebrate the year results and Christmas results as a region.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Working in Greene king can be very hard on work life balance however I have found that every line manager I have worked with within Greene King is supportive, approachable and honest. I have always felt the support form my managers for my development and growth in the business. The biggest seller to a company for me is the people that work in it which is why I would recommend Greene king.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
  • Be yourself and honest with your application. Take a look at external reviewing company’s for Greene king to get an understanding of what to expect. Understand that if you are living in the effects that will have in your home life and what those effects may make in your work.
