  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Overview of the 1st line of defence, challenging them when required through monthly and quarterly monitoring. Raising exceptions where necessary. Gaining open source intelligence from subscription website to gain an insight to the newest cyber attacks and mitigations of these. Suiting this to our business where necessary. Learning of malware and how this effects organisations worldwide.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • An abundance of skills. Ranging from communication skills when speaking to colleagues on topics I am unsure of. Increased my confidence overall when speaking. Adapted to the working environment and taken a regimented approach when dealing with enquiries. Taking more ownership of research tasks and presenting my ideas to the team for them to ask questions and give feedback.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far yes. Challenging and rewarding. Receiving credit for the work put in. Flexibility allows me to focus on my work in the job for the society. It keeps me focused and gives me a reason to be motivated and look forward. I can look at where I would want to be in the future and the future career opportunities are endless.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Organised in that the platforms are easy to navigate. Work is easy to record and review of my work is frequent with feedback being very constructive. Topics tie in with day to day working. I can dedicate a day to my apprenticeship programme and use work I have did on the job to input into my programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot from my line manager, mentor and team in general. Colleagues kind and friendly when unsure on something. Frequent training courses to improve your personal skills when dealing with difficult conversions, emotional intelligence and, employee engagement. My head of IT RISK provides technical overviews with me on networking for my personal knowledge.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Frequent calls and face to face meeting ensure I am on track and achieving what is needed. Updates are put on my smart assessor for what I need to do. I can email or call my assessor if I have any problems with the course or if I am stuck with anything.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Integration of topics allows me to cross reference my day to day work with the knowledge from my provider to create an in depth document of a certain subject. It gives me a plan to look forward to and something to work to. Knowing I will get credited for my work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Attendance of NISC (National Information Security Conference) and various other events to gain exposure to the world of cyber security. Focus days, big swap days allows communication with other parts of the business. NBS Christmas parties, summer parties, staff quiz nights. Early Talent projects with apprentices and undergrads around the society.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Amazing place to work where you reap what you put in. Frequent interactions with colleagues socially through staff association events. Work is challenging and there is a sense of progression through the constant monitoring of your behaviours with monthly personal development catch ups with management on how your doing on your own concerns.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Newcastle Building Society?
  • They will always consider other jobs for you if they believe your capable. Always put in the work if a presentation is required and make sure you know what you're talking about and be ready for any questions. Speak up in group work and talk about what you think of it is a scenario speak with the team make sure they understand what it is asking and that you understand it to.
