1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My position is a Trainee Electrical Engineer, working in an electrical portfolio team ensuring the Utility services to a vital site are upgraded and maintained well. I am training to become a Project Engineer, where I support project managers in technical areas for various projects. This includes substation replacement projects and control system upgrades to a Combined Heat and Power Plant. Roles and responsibilities include; planning work, compiling estimates, managing sub-contractors and working with the construction team helping to deliver on the project on the ground.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed my Engineering Knowledge both electrically and within general health and safety. I have had the opportunity to get involved with various lifts of substations including skidding of a substation opposed to a crane option. My people and management skills have developed a lot through my time in the business. This is through managing various sub-contractors and from giving various technical presentations.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I had never intended to go into an engineering profession; I always wanted to go into teaching or accountancy. I have previously completed a degree in Mathematics and I am now taking a degree though Morgan Sindall in Plant Engineering. In hindsight I should have started a Traineeship once I left 6th form. The company pay for your degree and you have the opportunity for lots of work experience on site whilst studying for you degree, without the student debt!

There is a few of bars, restaurants and leisure clubs in the local area. As the job is a remote location in Cumbria, there is not as much entertainment as there is a large city. However, there are a lot of nice scenic areas for walks in the fells.
