  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role was warehouse based. My job title 'Apprenticeship Warehouse Manager. Each day this first thing I do is come in and attend the morning brief that summarises the plan for the day ahead. I obtain this brief off my Site Operations Manager and deliver the relevant information to my team which consists of agency and warehouse operatives employed by Gist. I am responsible for the Pick operation within the warehouse which involves making sure all the stores receive the correct amount/type of product. This involves communicating with the intake manager and outload manager, which are the other key aspects of the operation.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learnt new skills such as managing a large number of people at one time and timekeeping skills to ensure the right truckloads leave the depot on time to ultimately make it to store on time. I have more so developed existing skills like communication, organisation and customer service. I have went on many training courses such as SHEQ, Communicating for results and leading and energising people which I feel were very valuable to me and taught me a lot.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I loved every minute of it, the team I worked with were very supportive and very easy to get along with. The working environment is very positive and all in all just a great place to work. This experience exceeded my expectations greatly I would not replace anything. I am very self-driven so to me I always feel like I could give more than what I am giving; this programme pushed me to the limit and always gave me a sense of achievement.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Gist Ltd?
  • Very valued, I always receive feedback for every action I take. This is sometimes negative but more so positive. All Feedback for me is important as it allows me to learn from mistakes and build on the decisions I make. Sometimes I would be even singled out in meetings about my standards and presentation, this recognition has come from the nights teams as well which means a lot to me as that is not even my shift.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • This is a very professional programme which gets a lot of attention from very senior people across the business. The investment that goes into the apprentice scheme is first class and I simply could not ask for a better programme as far as organisation and structure is concerned. From the moment I arrived here I have been treated brilliantly. I have a mentor who provides me with external support if I require it, this is very useful and offers that extra contact outside the depot.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Loads of support, I can never get enough support at this age and the more the better as it puts me in a good position to learn as much as possible. Whenever times are tough and I feel that I am out of my depth I always have someone to turn to and guide me through certain decision and situations which is great. The one thing I love about my team is that they never have to be asked to support me they naturally do it in a willing manner which means a lot to me.

My line manager's door is always open and he is very welcoming to me whenever I have any problems. As i mentioned previoiusly the culture here at Gist givesme so much confidence in saying that everyone is more willing to do things above the exxpected rather than waiting to be told to offer support.
