  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Recently qualified bus driver. My job entails lots of driving, along with customer service, vehicle checks and developing inter personal skills. Shifts vary between 8 and 12 hours, which means some long days, but as you’re always against the clock, time usually flies by! As with any job, has its ups and downs, but overall, quite en.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Well I had to learn how to drive a bus to start with! Not as easy as it may seem, but once you get the hang of it, it’s ok. And as you’re dealing with all sections of the public, my inter personal skills have definitely been developed!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is quite enjoyable, the trainers are all nice and friendly, and helpful when needed. The only problem I have is the structure of the program, but that's not their fault, that's because my employer can't afford to release me enough, but hopefully that will change soon.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Well, I think the structure is fine, but my employer is not able to release me enough for me to follow it! Again, that's not the fault of Realise, it's solely due to my employer. There is not too much work, and we are given plenty of time to complete tasks, and help when needed, so I can't complain about the structure.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Unfortunately, not enough. They have trouble being able to release me as often as they should, meaning I'm not as far on as I should be. I understand it's down to business pressures though, and i'm told that hopefully, things will improve in the very near future.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • All the support I need. This is something I can't fault them for. All trainers have been friendly, all know their stuff, and whenever help is needed, they have always been there for us. They have also made a wide range of support tools available t us when we are not in the classroom, again, all very useful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Because I'm still learning my job, any help from anywhere is always welcome. What I have found is that EVERY session has provided me with more knowledge about the job, or helpful ways of approaching things, that are all useful. Even the sessions when I think I know what we are covering have been a pleasant surprise!

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I'm going to struggle to find fifty words here, because the short and simple answer is no! I guess the job makes that kind of thing very hard to do, as the shifts cover 20 hours each day, seven days a week, and we can work all sorts of different hours and shift patterns.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Stagecoach UK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The job is basically, mostly, very enjoyable. Essentially, we drive around and meet lots of people, so there are worse ways to make a living. The money is ok, and the people are mostly helpful, friendly and supportive. Of course I have a few complaints, who doesn't, but I'm happy enough here.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Stagecoach UK?
  • As long as you can work with the public, and are prepared to work across all hours and shift patterns, just go for it. Learning a very tough skill is challenging, but hugely rewarding. You'll earn reasonable money, work with a decent group of people, and get Christmas Day off!
