  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Any planned maintenance on machines that my mentor has i will go with to shadow and work if in a safe environment. I will also go to breakdowns throughout the day as well as being put forward for training on the systems our machines use. Stores runs for parts are often done by apprentices as this is a good experience to learn the location of certain parts around site in stores. I am given projects throughout the year or i am presented with a problem and i am told to come up with a solution and this will be my project, for example my most recent project was a gripper test rig which tests the refurbished grippers to ensure they are functional and can go back on the machine.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My health and safety in the workplace has become a lot more developed, due to the environment of the factory having a good understanding of health and safety is needed. My communication skills have also developed due to having to speak to multiple people around site and working with such a wide range of people.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really do enjoy my programme it doesnt add to much pressure to my home and work life, HETA set a reasonable amount of college work as long as you keep up with it, the work at Howdens can be challenging at times however it is never stressful or out of depth so i enjoy working at howdens and the balance of college work i am given.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who is in charge of onsite apprentices ensures we have a structured program for the full year with exactly where we will be going and when, we currently do 3 months in different factories as well as planning and site services so we get an understanding of all the engineering routes here at Howdens.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If we need support we can get it, throughout the program i study i have been given enough support by HETA and my employer to get me through everything ive needed too so far within my work life. If support is needed for anything it is offered which is good.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • HETA send someone in every 3 months to check our progress and we also have contact details of this person to allow us to get in touch if we do need any support. The support is there if its needed as we use the online system onfile which means we can contact anyone who is at the training provider if needs be.

  • Very everything we learnt at HETA is relevant to what i do onsite. It is all relevant to my industry.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Howdens to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Look after all staff and run a good program for apprentices, you are offered a job once qualified which makes a difference to some companies who will not do the same. They do not apply to much pressure on you as a employee, everyone is happy to help and the environment you work in usually positive.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Howdens?
  • Ensure you research the company and understand the role you are going into and make sure you definitely want it. It is a big commitment to work for Howdens as an apprentice however a rewarding one. Ensure you are confident and have prepared for your interview as it is very good interview that you will be put through.
