  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I manage a team of 8 staff members who deliver on wildlife licenses. I make sure that their work is correctly triaged and allocated so that they are able to complete their work to the best of their ability. I also look after their wellbeing, HR, any special adjustments they may need

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • So far on the apprenticeship I have learned how to manage my time more effectively, an example of this being prioritising my work on my outlook calendar on a colour coded system so for example, red appointments are more urgent than green. This has worked well and allowed me to manage time better

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have only recently started my programme however so far I am enjoying it. I like that I have monthly workshops with other people from my department as I feel part of a cohort rather than working completely on my own, this also allows us to share ideas and gain perspectives

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My course is really well organised - I have an online system that allows me to view set, unset and completed work and see how far along the apprenticeship I am. I have a lot of work to complete in my normal role and I am able to come in and out of the apprenticeship easily

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a lot of support from my employer, they really value personal and professional growth and my manager has been really on board letting me complete the apprenticeship. They have had no problem in me blocking out time to complete modules etc which is really nice and reduces stress

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider has assigned a coach to me who has been really helpful and explains things really well so I know exactly what is going on. I have no problem reaching out to my coach in between our weekly catch ups and he is always available to help me

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that this apprenticeship relates really well to my role as I am a team leader requiring to learn about time management, holding difficult conversations and other management skills. it has also allowed me to explore my own management techniques which has been really useful as I did not know them before

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There aren't really that many as I work in a national team therefore all of my colleagues are all over the country and not accessible to join the same team for example. We do have a lot of virtual wellbeing sessions and now that covid restrictions have lifted we do try to meet up often

  • 9a. Would you recommend Natural England to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend them to a friend because they are an extremely inclusive employer that gets involved in important, interesting work. They focus on wellbeing and progression which is rare to find and I feel valued in my role. I have a particular interest in wildlife so it really suits me

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Natural England?
  • I would say just be yourself as they are extremely inclusive and friendly, I would say that it would help to have an interest in the work that you would be completing however this can be hard to determine through a batch interview, but a general interest would help you
