  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • Was incredibly insightful into the world of banking, I had relatively little knowledge going into the experience but after a week I was so proud of how much I had learnt. HSBC provided packed days of interactive sessions and provided the opportunity to network with all the speakers during the sessions in smaller break-out rooms. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to all, I have changed career paths from this experience.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • How to public speak, grow a personal brand and how to engage with others over an online platform. There were sessions on apprenticeships, CV and cover letter writing, it was amazing how knowledgeable everyone was. Also got a talk on our own personal finances and how we can look after ourselves in the future.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I absolutely loved it! I was sad when it ended and hope to work for HSBC now in the future. It was a completely jam packed schedule non-stop over the course of the 5 days. I had the opportunity to network with professionals high up within HSBC and make connections with them afterwards via Linkedin.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • It took a very long process to be accepted onto the program and communication wasn't the best. On the days we had online sessions the links were sent out early and information was provided normally the day before so can't complain in that respect. It was just such as long period of time to go through the recruitment process.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • It was an amazing place that placed high value and important upon creating a friendly and supportive working environment for all. I noted that many of the staff I spoke with all mentioned how well HSBC look after staff particularly when comparing this to how they were treated at similar banks.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • I really completed the work experience so that I had something for my personal statement as I really had no idea what I wanted to do in the future. However, this all completely changed after this experience I realised I thoroughly enjoyed working within teams, crunching numbers and being a people person negotiating with clients. I have now applied to loads of apprenticeships within the banking sector including one with HSBC.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • No, it was online so there were no associated costs from travel, meals or social costs.

    1/10

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • YES YES YES! I spoke with about 5 people every day either individually or through small groups of around 5. It was brilliant, I have come away with so many useful connections for the future on Linkedin.

  • 9a. Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It really helped focus where I wanted my career to go and not only this but to improve my confidence in my abilities after speaking with so many professionals and increasing my knowledge within areas of the bank.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
  • Make sure to personalise your CV and cover letter but tailor it towards showing HSBC how you demonstrate their core values in your daily life.
