  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an commercial Business partner I support the business and channel owners in delivering their budgeted profitability. • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt Budgeting and forecasting processes, P&L management, Return on Investment and Capex requests. From a system perspective, I am a more competent user of Excel to manipulate data as well as using Reporting Analytic software to speed up and improve accuracy of data. This is turns helps the business to make accurate and quicker decisons.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program is very professional and I have been impressed with the level of communication and support. Doing the apprenticeship alongside a Full time job is challenging but I do feel Fortnum's are very supportive in employee's own development. This will only benefit both (employee and company) at the end of the day

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Yeah, this is well set out and clear to complete. As there are a few employees doing apprenticeship amongst Finance it does feel more like a team then an individual. The on job learning has been supported with in house session being provided by the L&D team which has been very helpful.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We have plenty of support from the employer, if we need anything we not only have our line manage but we also have an individual within HR that are there for us should we have any needs or additional requirements. There is a strong focus and culture of learning within the company.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Kaplan have a useful website and support system in place where you can find discussion topic, all the material for the session (although these have been sent out as Hard copies) and the ability to contact tutors to ask them anything you are not sure about. It is very clear and easy to navigate.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe that the apprenticeship will give me some new skills and knowledge that will help me in my career as well as possible reinforce the knowledge that I already have. Being self taught has advantages but the cons are that you may have been taught incorrectly so studying would pick this up.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are lots of things going on at Fortnums'. We have different networks available for us to join from Diversity and Inclusion to Family networks as well as sustainability groups. I think Covid has restricted the social or activities but I am sure these will start to return soon.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Fortnum & Mason to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Although Fortnum's is a well known and large company, it still has that Family feel about it where Directors and Chairwoman know your name and are approachable. I think you have the ability to really make a difference within your role which isn't always the case in some businesses!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Fortnum & Mason?
  • I would say to share your passions as this is what makes people at Fortnum's different to other companies. There are many candidates that will be able to do the job that you are applying for, but I think it is important to showcase yourself and your talent in a unique way.
