  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a civil engineer and my day to day work consists of various tasks such as completing design substantiation of nuclear critical structures and proposing new design options for the safe use of the structures.

  • Improved soft skills, confidence, increased technical knowledge in civil engineering calculations, greater appreciation of nuclear safety, improved commercial awareness, ability to use design and analysis software.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is challenging and enjoyable, i have variety in my job and some days i may be working in the office whilst other days i will be working on site. i enjoy the variety and the challenge of completing a degree

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure is fairly well organised and my university/employer have clear end objectives for me. The university programme could be better structured, however, i am one of the first cohorts to be completing the degree apprenticeship with Cavendish and Exeter.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is extremely supportive with my development needs, they allow me to prioritise university work and allow for time to be set aside when i am feeling over-worked.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider has clear goals and are as supportive as they can be. But, there is a disconnect between their expectations and the reality of the working world. They could be more aware of what goes on in the office with more frequent visits and communication.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification has proved to be very valuable in my role. However, i find that my role really helps with my qualification. I am able to complete tailored project work to suit my course.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I regularly attend STEM events which is very well supported by the company. I often host work experience and attend open evenings. We are encouraged to engage with activities with our institutions. However, there is very little in the way of social activities/sports teams.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Cavendish Nuclear to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Cavendish are very supportive to your needs and have your best interests in mind. There are many opportunities within the company and many of the projects are multidisciplinary. They have supported me from a Level 3 apprenticeship all the way to the degree programme.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cavendish Nuclear?
  • Before joining the company, try and secure work experience and give yourself a feel of working life. Cavendish are supportive with this and there have been many cases of past work experience students obtaining jobs at cavendish. Show a willingness and desire to learn and the company will support you.
