  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • For my apprenticeship I am training to be a welder for the defence contractor babcock, my day to day consists of starting college at 7:30am and finishing at 3:45 during this we get hands on training on all the welding processes and 1 day a week we have a theory day where we learn the science behind the processes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have leaned alot of new and extremely useful skills so far in my apprenticeship , from Learning new processes such as MIG welding, MMA welding, Flux Cored welding and TIG welding and have gained a good understanding of the theory of behind each of the processes and I am know able to have complexed conversations with my instructors and colleagues about the topic.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Applying for this apprenticeship with babcock is most definitely the best career choice I have ever meet and have no regrets what so ever about doing it, I enjoy the hands on experiences I am gaining everyday and everyday we are learning something different from new processes, techniques to new methods.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel my apprenticeship programme is extremely well structured, with realistic time schedule and completion dates of tasks, an achievable apprenticeship completion date, and appropriately scheduled progress tests. Everybody knows what needs to be achieved and by when with ample support to help you achieve your targets on time be it practical or theory.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We reserve huge amounts of support and guidance from Babcock, from helping is this our apprenticeships gain from practical and theory, the correct advice and roots we should take if you wish to progress through managerial rolls. Babcock are also extremely helpful when it come to supporting your mental and physical health by constantly checking there employees and have dedicated staff who you can talk to.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again we reserve an extraordinary amount of help from out training provider, being City College Plymouth. They are constantly reassuring every single apprentice in their care and no matter what you are struggling with they are always willing to go over and above to help you achieve your targets and goals.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The skills and qualifications I and gaining from my training provided (city college plymouth) will most definitely help me perform better in my role as a welder at Babcock as they are giving me the basic skills and knowledge required, so that Babcock and build on them in my second year to my fourth, so that I can before a fully qualified and respected welder.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Babcock have loads of extra curricular activities they have within and out of the company, from social activities such as helping the community, competitions with the company and against other companies. Babcock really care about there employees health and do there best to support there by supporting the cycle to work schemes, have multiple gyms the dockyard at discounted prices.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Babcock to everybody as they are an amazing company to work for, as the really do care for the staff and their opinions. There is endless opportunities with the company from training, promotions, wages, and you even relocate around the world with them if you wish to. And for an apprenticeship the money is extremely good as you are paid to lean and it only get better.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • My advice to anyone who's is thinking about applying for a Babcock apprenticeship is, 'just go for it', I have worked to a few different companies and hands down I have no regrets about my applying, it is the best thing I have ever done, I am excited to come to work every day and even more excited to see where my carrier will end up with in Babcock.
