I am in an office based engineering role in the marine sector of Babcock. I work closely with project teams and collate information about any design queries they have when installing a new piece of equipment. I am also a STEM coordinator and I'm heavily involved in outreach for recruitment at schools.
I have started from ground zero with engineering knowledge, so my apprenticeship has built these foundation skills for me to develop on. This has been helped massively with on the job experience. I have also developed my soft skills such as leadership and communication.
I am now towards the end of my programme and i have had a tremendous amount of opportunities which have been enjoyable. I doubt i would have got any of these opportunities outside of the company. I enjoy the engineering work i do, and networking with other people around the business.
I am gapping a position currently so my daily tasks are laid out for me and my responsibilities are clear. I can manage my progress against KPIs. I have daily interactions with both employees inside the business (great for networking) and also externally with other businesses and stakeholders. I understand the requirement for off the job training and what is required from me to pass my apprenticeship.
I have received support in many different ways, both on a personal and professional level. I have had the benefit from the employee assistance programme through 1-1 counselling and also through the mental health first aiders. On a professional level, i have been developed through professional institutions such as EngTech. I have also been supported through qualifications such as a foundation degree.
With my qualification i have been able to apply for EngTech through IET. I have gained foundation skills to engineering which i can apply to my day to day role.
I get involved with STEM events at local schools and primary schools. I also network with other people around the company through the Babcock networks.
Yes
The opportunities gained through Babcock, i would not have had at any other company. I am set up for a fantastic career in engineering. I also believe the pay is very good for the South West.
Practice the online tests, and research the company for the interview. Also, try to come to careers fairs to speak to apprentices and benefit from their experience.
