Quantity Surveyor Apprentice Review

Day to day activities include checking on asite to see any updated files have been sent. Checking the live cost plan and updating it depending on the changes. Daily meetings with manager on schemes for BOQs or estimates to make sure I have work to do. If I'm not busy I would do some revision or coursework for uni.

I've learnt how to become better at time management, there are loads of meetings so you constantly have to plan ahead and complete your work on time. I understand the ways we use cost plans and estimates and how helpful they can be. Working in a group and being able to speak to contractors easily.

I think the apprenticeship is really good, they have planned it where you get to change your placement every 6 months so you get a variety of skills covered which I think is a great idea. Everyone in the office is really nice and helpful. I am enjoying the programme so far.

There have been many apprentices beforehand so the structure is extremely organized. One day a week at uni and the rest in the office or on site. I have regularly meetings with my manager and sponsor. And there are loads of group nights out with similar people in apprenticeship going through the same thing which is also helpful to know you're not alone. Uni isn't as organized as I would have hoped

My employer covers a lot of other apprentices so it can be difficult to ask for help as they cover for us as well as do their own job. There are group meetings every couple of months where they explain the overall scheme but it isn't one on one. Overall very helpful but wouldn't see them regularly enough to rely on them.

University is very disorganized. They allow us enough time to do our reports or revision but the lecturers aren't very helpful and don't always teach you everything. The lectures moved around a lot so it was quite confusing to work out which lecturer would next. Would have thought they would be better considering the amount of money they receive.

Learning the engineering side at university does make you understand the process of quantity surveying a lot better. It is easier to understand when you go on site and you understand what they are talking about because of photos and descriptions that were at uni. You do have to do a lot of your own research as well to help.

Yes there is loads of these. Lots of meet ups with our apprentice group, and apprentices that are in higher years. Theres a football club and we are introducing a badminton club on Tuesdays. There are a few professional networking events every couple of months but haven't managed to go to one yet.

Transport for London has been the best company I've ever worked in. The people in the office (some not even in your team) are extremely helpful and really easy to talk to. It's a relaxed atmosphere at times but it can also be very stressful so it's good that there is a mix. And it's also quite rewarding making people's lives a little easier for example the daily commute, it feels good that I work for a company which helps thousands of people each day.

Apply online and be prepared for the interview as it was the hardest interview. But do it as it's worth it there are loads of benefits like the free oyster card and a great pension. Everyone I've met in this company is great and easy to talk to. Best decision was coming here and it's way better then I ever expected it to.
