Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 GCSE’s Grade A* - C or Grade 4 and above, including Maths and English Language (or equivalents)
  • You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.
  • Applicants holding the following will not be eligible to apply: 
  • Level 3 Apprenticeship or qualifications in electrical installation 
  • You must be 18 years of age by 13th January 2025 to be eligible for this scheme.

Please be advised that should you be successful in getting an offer for this apprenticeship scheme, your offer will be subject to a satisfactory medical which may include but is not limited to: drugs and alcohol screening, hearing test and eyesight tests including Ishihara Plates and Colour Assessment and Diagnosis tests to determine colour deficiency.

Job overview

London Underground plays an essential role in our city’s development. Our network covers 253 miles, serving 275 stations and carriers more than five million passengers per day. 

The role of a London Underground engineering apprentice is critical to ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of our tube network. The technological advancements we are seeing in our trains and operating infrastructure mean that we need to adapt the way we maintain our assets to keep them operating at peak performance. You’ll be at the forefront of these developments whilst also keeping a watchful eye on our legacy assets across the network.

What will I be doing?

Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn from experienced and qualified staff through various placements across the organisation to gain a broad spectrum of knowledge through a hands-on approach to learning.

Power – LV Cables  

As a London Underground LV Cables Apprentice, you will participate and work with competent teams that ensure the LV Cables Assets are maintained and delivered into service in a safe and timely manner. During your apprenticeship, you will be placed across a range of departments within the LV Cables areas, enabling you to experience and learn how the LV Cables Divisions function. You will learn how to read Electrical and Mechanical Drawings, be trained to write reports, fault finding, understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems. 

On completion of our Apprenticeship, you will become an IRSE Licensed Electrical Traction Distribution Technician, a Qualified Electrician and a LV Cable Jointer.

Working within the Power Delivery Unit of the Asset Performance Directorate of London Underground, your role will be to maintain, upgrade and operate power assets. This will include other related activities such as fault rectification and support to other units in relation to Power assets.

Accountabilities 

  • Identify task and assemble materials.
  • Check tools, equipment and materials for fitness for purpose (covered by IRSE 4.2.110).
  • Manage the work site.
  • Work safely at all times.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within his/her control.
  • Report to other deviations which cannot be solved.
  • Follow the correct process/operations for the allocated task.
  • Establish and maintain communication with the relevant persons.
  • Ensure that the task is completed within limit of authority and competence (covered by IRSE 4.2.110).
  • Correctly establish scope and accuracy of testing
  • Carry out required testing using correctly accessed equipment and methods.
  • Take action to rectify the defective asset.
  • Understanding: Handover asset in accordance with company procedures
  • Complete documentation in accordance with company procedures

This apprenticeship is just the start of your career, the roles and opportunities available to you are endless.

On completion of the apprenticeship, you could roll of into a Senior Technician role. After gaining invaluable experience and knowledge within the LV Cable department, whilst carrying out your role as an IRSE Licenced Electrical Traction Distribution Technician, you may wish to look to progress into a Team Leader role and eventually even become a Works Controller. All Team Leaders and Managers within the Department have progressed from Support staff through the ranks to become Managers and you could be the future of LV Cables.

You’ll also have the opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training, safety training to technical skills training.
