  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the Commercial and Propositions area in the Go to Market team where we liaise with multiple stakeholders and coordinate people to launch products successfully into BT Small Medium Business. The day to day involves working with the core propositions team to ensure the briefs are being met and the propositions being launched align with our SMB strategy.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Communication skills, I have had multiple opportunities to present to Senior leaders to develop my presentation skills. Time management has been very crucial when trying to balance university and work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy work and speaking to people daily. I believe without going into the office I would enjoy it much less as I love speaking and meeting new people. I have a great team who are supportive within work but also great to talk to about things other than work and made me feel very comfortable when asking my 'silly' questions.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Good, BT have us on rotations so each year we will get another role. I am still in my first role so unsure on the process yet.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot, my manager always makes time to help me if I need anything and there is people within my wider team that are available to talk if I have a question also. I have weekly catch-ups with my manager in place and quarterly development sessions to ensure I am progressing.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We go to university 12 days per year and have the occasional webinar. Tutors are available to email if you need help on assignments and made it clear that they are there to help. I would say we maybe need more webinars/calls as 12 days is not a lot of time considering the amount of work we have.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think some things such as presentations, help me be more vocal and develop my communication skills so that I can perform better at work but the assignments and theory so far I'm not sure how it is related to my role so can't really comment on that aspect. I would say the research done on the company in the assignments have helped me understand BT as a whole and determine their strategy.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Occasionally there will be social events put on but more so from my wider team than apprentices, which is great because I can connect with people in my area. When we joined there was a great induction where we had 2 nights away with all the 2023 cohort which I really enjoyed. I think because we have a smaller office there is less events, whereas London and Birmingham and Bristol seem to have a lot more e.g netball club.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BT has a unique programme due to the opportunity to rotate around the business, so you are not stuck in one role and get to experience multiple different jobs. There are so many routes to go down and lots of opportunities at BT that would be beneficial to any young person starting their career. People are friendly, teams are supportive and overall its a good working environment. 3 together rule in the office makes it better for young people to meet new friends also :)

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Make sure you reach out to current apprentices/grads and make those contacts to set up a chat or even try get some work experience as you never know where it could lead. You need to be proactive and different, don't just press apply, think about what you could bring and why they should choose you.
