  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role can vary on a day to day basis. Some days I will have to post hundreds of invoices, the next day I might have to send hundreds of emails chasing payments from customers and on another day there might be hundreds of delivery notes I need to check and match to our invoices.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In 6 months have developed my IT skills a lot since working here using applications such as Imetal and Sage. Being in accounts has also allowed me to develop my numeracy skills as I am working with large figures on a daily basis. I have also improved my time management skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have very much enjoyed my programme so far. I have been placed in multiple different departments in order to get a taste of what goes on and how the company operates as a system. I am currently in accounts and very much enjoy my job along with enjoying working with the people in the accounts office.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think my programme is structured and organised very well. My apprenticeship tutor has meetings with me either face to face or via microsoft teams call to catch up with me and check on my progress. He also doesn't overload me with lots of work and sets a sufficient amount each time we have a meeting.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. If ever there is an incident either at work or outside of work, straight away I know who I can go to in order to talk to about it. Whether that be someone in my office or one of the directors, everyone is very supportive.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from my tutor. Whenever we have a meeting he asks how I am doing and how my work is going. He encourages me to ask questions if I'm not sure of anything or to seek help from him if I am struggling on a piece of work he has set me.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • When completing workbooks for my qualification, certain topics can be helpful in helping me to perform better in my role. For example, completing a workbook on policies or business fundamentals gives me a good indication of the type of behavioural standard that should be set in the workplace. This allows me to know the standards I should set myself and helps me to perform better in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • In the upcoming months, USP are taking part in 2 events to raise money for charity. The first is a quiz organised by Blackthorns accountants and the second is the dragon boat race taking place at Himley Park. Just a few weeks ago a lot of Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion fans from our offices watched the game from the hawthorns from an executive box as part of a matchday sponsorship.

  • 9a. Would you recommend USP STEELS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a good company to work for. The staff here are very friendly and easy to talk to. If they live in a similar area to me its it not a very far commute. They offer a free gym that anyone can use 24/7 all week. It is a very nice place to work as their offices are very sleek and modern having only been built in October 2022.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to USP STEELS?
  • Make your CV very straight forward and easy to read, do not make it too long or else it may be disregarded. If you have an interview, arrive in smart office workwear and be sure to exude confidence and make eye contact as much as you can. Make sure to sit up straight and have the correct body language in order to show the interviewer you are interested in what they are saying.
