  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role in the BMW Group is currently labelled as a Lab Technician. However, this role has changed between my placements. In my current placement, I am part of the crankshaft machining department, getting involved with testing parts for hardness on the line and helping set up new testing programs for the use of operators.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt various skills during my time on-site. My placement manager is helping me organise my apprenticeship so that I can get involved with as many departments and learn a wide variety of skills and knowledge. Thus far, I have expanded my knowledge on different fields such as manufacturing processes, material analysis and chemistry.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The variety in my daily activities and the new opportunities that frequently arise in my programme are making it a very enjoyable experience. It is exciting to work with different departments and understand what systems they use to function successfully whilst also thinking of new ways they can be improved upon.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I am happy with the structure of my programme. It is not too rigid, meaning that when I happen to find a department I would really like to get involved with, I am able to get assistance from my apprentice manager to find space in my programme to work with them.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is always support available for me at BMW Group. Having an apprentice manager helps as it means I always have someone who is easy to contact and available. There are also lots of colleagues who I have encountered in my placements who have been more than happy to help when needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support from my training provider at James Watt College helps ensure that I am on track with my academic work. For each of my modules, I have an assigned tutor who I can email if I ever have any queries or issues. My apprentice manager also keeps in contact with the training provider to make sure we are on track.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Although some modules do not apply specifically to the work I have done so far, most of the subjects we are taught provide us with knowledge that is relevant to work at BMW Group. Most of these modules focus on business and engineering fields of study, so can always be applied in some way to our work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, currently I am getting involved every week in a friendly 5-a-side game with other apprentices and interns at the Hams Hall plant. This is arranged by one of the interns and is something I am really enjoying taking part in. It would be great if the apprentices and interns made this a long-term arrangement.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great place to begin your career, because of the enthusiasm of the workforce and opportunities available. Working here gives you the chance to learn from many people who have a wealth of knowledge in engineering. The apprenticeships in particular are a fantastic opportunity to gain qualifications whilst getting valuable experience on-site.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • When applying to BMW Group, show what your interests and attributes are that align with the values of the BMW Group. This plant among many others in the BMW network have large goals for the future and are always looking to invest in apprentices for this reason. So you should make it clear on what makes you a great long-term asset for the company.
