  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basic i manage the team in showrooms, check for any new appointments, check the system for complaints and if we have any installation surveys to come back or to be booked. I make sure my install coordinators are on the ball with installs that are starting and are in contact daily with customer to check in and see how it is going. I also need to make sure the stock is getting put on the shelf and that my team are focused on sales and gaining new customers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When i first done my apprenticeship i was fairly new to b&q, my confidence was the best and my customer services skills were average. I feel now i have gained confidence in myself and i can handle complaints the best i can. I know to stay calm and listen to the customer and apologise then find a solution. Whereas before i would have maybe given cheek or had a rude tone.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have now finished my apprenticeship. I found it very interesting and helpful. I feel my trainer Cat was the best, we got on really well and she was friendly which made it more comfortable if i had to ask for help or to explain something better. It has gave me loads of confidence in customer service and i have recommended it to several colleagues.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme was structured ok, there was a few questions where i felt it went over the topic or questions a couple of times which was frustrating because you had to repeat yourself a lot. The relevance of the topics were good and i was given plenty of time in between sessions to study and prepare for it.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer was great at supporting. I always had time to study and to take my calls with my trainer. My Manager had to go on the call herself and talk about the things i had done and confirm what i had said, this wasnt once an issue and she always made time to do it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is great at providing courses and apprenticeships to progress, there is always something you can progress at and they certainly help you do that. I have done customer service level 2 and in the future i will hopefully do the showroom one or team leader to manager.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the skills gained and knowledge helps you do better in any circumstance. It helps show what you are not comfortable with and what you may need help with. It does this so the trainer can help improve your skills and you use these everyday. This qualification would help with any job not just the one i am in

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is loads of fundraising opportunities to take part in with in my employer. In regards to social events, not often. At the end of the apprenticeship we go get a graduation with stores all across the uk but that is only if you graduated that year. There isnt any sports teams and not sure about networking events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend B&Q to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • this is a great place to work for, great people great benefits and great pay. In comparison to most employers b&q minimum wage is higher than the rest and they tend to keep it like that so employees stay loyal. The workers in store and in head office and friendly and helpful. and the benefits like gym discount, shopping discount and great pension are all things you look for when working.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to B&Q?
  • Be yourself. Be confident. If you are a student this a great place to work, we work round student hours on tills and showrooms and even other departments. As a first job it is the best you are going to get. if you get a job dont get stressed and dont be scared to ask for help.
