  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a customer advisor. Day to day tasks include serving customers at a till, assisting customers with product queries, replenishing stock levels, assisting other departments in busy periods, building key relationships with traders, recruit new traders to our loyalty scheme, general housekeeping and mapping out our area of sale such as de-locating and locating stock.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since being on my apprenticeship program, I have zoned in on areas I was lacking in prior. Examples of this include general confidence to perform my role and warehouse knowledge to name a couple. Brand new skills I have learnt is more optimal methods of encouraging my team to achieve a set goal.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I would say my experience was overall decent in terms of enjoyment. I looked forward to checking in with my guidance trainer and seeing where I was in my journey. It was a good opportunity also to speak about work and how my mind-set was at any given time. It's nice to have an opinion from someone who understands the sector but is totally level on views.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I felt the program was structured decent, I had plenty of notice as to when my meetings were and if anything did come up then rescheduling didn't seem to be a problem. The online classes and courses seem to flow well and mostly made sense upon first viewing, for the times I didn't fully understand my assignment however I had my training provider to assist.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • This is hard to estimate as I preferred to work at home for my program, however with the on the job training required for completion of program my employer was flexible and tailored my shifts to suit myself better for meetings, work deadlines etc. I didn't personally encounter any issues with work during program.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I can't fault the support I received from my training provider while on program, from technical issues with my account to feeling too ill for a meeting-there was never an issue. It was handy having my training provider at the end of a message, even if they were busy they would be able to get back to me in a quick manner.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel I have taken the skills and training into my day to day responsibilities at work. I've been told there's been a change in my work behaviour since coming of the program. I feel I’m more productive with my time at work now using my time smarter.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • In my branch I wouldn't say there is consistently. I have hosted a sports team event with colleagues outside of work prior for morale purposes however asides that there isn’t much extra activities other than annual holiday celebrations. As a whole, the company does support/allow community event's such as networking, charity events etc.

  • 9a. Would you recommend B&Q to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel B&Q is a fantastic company for someone who wants a varied role with challenges that are achievable. Ideal if you’re someone who is aspiring for a career in retail or even looking to eventually go self-employed as we have all walks of life in our stores on a daily basis.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to B&Q?
  • I would say be fully flexible with your hours as B&Q is open 7:00am up until 8:00pm. Additionally, it helps to have a genuine interest to learn, you don’t have to know everything how to board a room or how to perfectly paint a skirting board etc. All that matters is that you’re willing to learn and want to help the community of DIY’ers.
