  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Varies day to day. Some days I will be opening the business others I may be closing the business this includes counting safes, tills, conducting checks in the kitchen and restaurant. As well as on shift being responsible for leading a team of around 10 people. The job mainly consists of hosting, taking people to tables and ensuring the business is functioning efficiently.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a lot more confidence since becoming a shift supervisor, you are expected to know all the fundamentals of the business as well as show good initiative. It has also shown me I can work under pressure and think logically in those times. I have also been able to develop my leadership skills from what my apprenticeship has explained as to what style works best in certain situations.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy learning, I like to know as much as possible about what I do so it can aid me in making decisions, helping the team, guests and other members of management. However, with the position I am in as a shift supervisor, working 55 hour weeks on average, it is extremely difficult to balance work, an apprenticeship and my own time.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I believe it is very well structured. My tutor helps as much as possible and is thorough with the information and feedback. The only thing I was displeased about is being informed the course is 12 months long but finding out the gateway period is two months after this, with no option to fast track if knowledge is already known.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In all honestly, not a lot. I have been able to learn new things on the job which is amazing but this would have happened with or without my apprenticeship. With my current employer (currently undergoing a change over as changing employers) I have not had any decisions regarding my apprenticeship, had any interest shown in it nor have I had allocated and paid time to do any work. This strongly puts me off wanting to progress to level 4.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My tutor is very helpful, he is understanding of my views and is very supportive and encouraging when I wish to recieve a distinction. If I have any questions he does not know the answer to he will go and find the answer and reply as soon as he knows. Been a big help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In all honesty, I don't believe completing an apprenticeship has altered how I've been performing a great deal. I may take a bit more consideration into a decision but over all it has not affected my performance a great deal. This is not being my tutor or learning provider is doing anything wrong but most of the content I already know or is of use but not relevant to perform I.e might be information about legislation.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are no extra curricular activities available to me, that I am aware of. I was invited to attend an assistant manager day in Birmingham but due to my decision to leave m and b, decided it was not necessary for me to attend the day. Limited events are available to shift supervisors.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mitchells & Butlers to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Mitchells and Butlers haven't been a bad company to work for, they have provided me with so much knowledge and experience I'm not sure I would attain else where. They also provided me with furlough during covid which I know a lot of people didn't in other jobs.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitchells & Butlers?
  • Be prepared to sign your social life away. Working in hospitality means you will work a lot of hours, rarely have weekends off and work short staffed a lot of the time. Depending on the brand, you will be expected to work ridiculous offers like 50% for the business to make minimal money. It is a very stressful environment and in my opinion, toxic at times as some guests are not very understanding.
