  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Our day to day consists of working on servicing and repairing aircraft engines and making sure each one is serviceable. This entails making repairs to parts, changing parts and making sure to keep every step logged and documented to allow for no margin of error and problems later down the line.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt plenty of new skills. These include but are not limited too. Working the systems used at work at GE and making sure to use all the correct documentation methods. More uses with my hands including working with power tools and machinery and working with engineering drawings and pictures.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the program as a whole due to the type of work we do. It is very fulfilling and is also very enjoyable. It allows you to think outside the box and gives you the open mindset if some problem was to occur. It allows you to expand your knowledge.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As a whole the program was not very well organized. Our management had a tendency to dismiss our problems or concerns which made me feel pushed away and a bit lost due to not having the proper support when problems came up. Events were never properly coordinated and when it came to big decisions like change of pay or shifts, no actions were taken on time.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As a whole I believe I had a reasonable amount of support from the employer nut from management I don't believe I had as much as a should of. When it came to personal issues I was once again, dismissed and I always felt out of place when coming to management with issues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When working towards qualifications I think we did have the baseline support when needed but it felt like we were pushed away whenever we had a cause for concern or issue about paperwork or important documents. However, we did get the necessary training for the role in which we undertook.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think as a whole the way the qualification worked and how it was structed helped me to understand what operations are used round the factory and how the documentation process works. We were writing logs which are used on a day to day basis and this helped us gain practice for when we come out of our time.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There were only a few activities in which we could get involved in when undertaking our apprenticeship. These included, college days, school speaking events and volunteering. However, in terms of sports teams or social events there was hardly any. There was the occasional event for running but that was about it.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GE Aerospace to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • It depends in what context. If I were to recommend a friend for the apprenticeship program. I wouldn't but as a job as a whole I would suggest it is a very stable career path. The job itself isn't too bad however the management style is not the most efficient.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?
  • The main tip I would use is don't apply for the apprenticeship unless there are new training coordinators and new apprentice leaders. However as applying for a engineer I would suggest it being a very likely thing to do. They are very good employers and the work is very steady and productive.
