  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to shadow and gain experience with technicians on the shop floor. We have different departments around site and every 8 months we rotate round to gain knowledge and experience on different parts of the business. We shadow the experienced technicians on anything from fault finding to testing the equipment, and even going into meetings with them.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed so many new skills and developed on my existing skills. There are things you get explained on your very first week and you think I'll never know that, but I look back now 8 months since I've started and think, how did I never know this? And I believe it is credit to the scheme we're on and the methods of teaching they use.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying my time here at GE Aerospace, the people you work with on a daily basis are really welcoming and really helpful. the management teams rare really good people managers and keep a good morale on the shop floors. Everyone is always open to talk to you about anything which really helps settle you in and gives you someone to go to if you are struggling with anything.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The Advanced Manufacturing Apprentice scheme is really well run and really well structured. You have monthly tripartite reviews to ensure you are doing well at college and how you are getting on in the workplace. When meetings are scheduled it is really well communicated and there are instructions on what buildings and rooms they are in as an example.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive an amazing amount of support. You are asked on a regular basis if any support is needed and there are always people open to help with support. And things aren't always to do with work, from a personal perspective I had a car accident in January of this year and as soon as I let them know they were so quick to help and offer support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We get offered a lot of support from Gloucestershire College in regards to college work and personal things as well. Again with my car accident they were so quick to offer support and quick to let me know what I missed so I could catch up on it. College tutors are always happy to message you on teams if you have any queries on some of the work that you have been covering which is really helpful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the knowledge you gain is extremely helpful when at work. It helps give you a better understanding of what you are doing when working on the circuit boards and what components do what on the board and it helps give you that sense of independence on the shop floor and not to rely on someone else all the time when you are starting to understand things for yourself.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are plenty of extra curricular activities around site. There are extra curricular activities depending on what building you are in and what team you are in as well, so there are plenty of opportunities for a great social side to this job as well. As an example of a sports teams are the 5 a side football that happen on the 3G pitch over the road every Thursday.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great opportunity to get a great career path and start your working life. Even if you are in your later stages of your career it is still a great opportunity to join because GE look at your life experiences and see how they could benefit the way in which we work. GE love fresh eyes coming into the business with fresh ideas on how to improves operations.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?
  • Be yourself don't be afraid to put yourself out there. GE can see everything on the CV and your documentation so when talking to them or having an interview that's really the time they get to see the real you. Ask loads of questions no matter how silly you think they are, GE love seeing people with that willingness to learn and improve upon things.
