  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves working on HR processes around reward and benefits, analysing our people data and sharing insight around the reward package our organisation provides. I am frequently in contact with the members of my team as well as other members of HR to understand and support their data analysis needs. I work on a number of projects using a range of software to share key figures behind our data and provide interpretations to key stakeholders.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed many skills, including my ability to use data analysis softwares like Microsoft Excel, RStudio, SQL and Power BI. I have also developed my team working skills and ability to present data efficiently and concisely, alongside improving my time management and critical thinking. I've also achieved qualifications in data analysis tools and concepts as part of my apprenticeship programme.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my programme as it has taught me a number of new skills and I fell it has set me up well to continue to pursue a career in data analysis. I enjoy learning new tips and tricks that support me with my work to make life easier as well as the networking and social opportunities I've been given.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has been fairly well structured and my learning coach has made the procedures and assessment details as clear as possible to me. They provided me with a timeline for key assessment and training dates, however I feel there had been a slight lack of communication with the company beforehand about the training weeks.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provide me with a lot of support, especially my line manager who has taken the time to create as many opportunities for me as possible to utilise my skills and ensure I can succeed in my apprenticeship. My colleagues always offer support if I need it and there are many people I can go to if I have any questions with things I am struggling on.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My learning coach puts in regular one to one catch ups with me to check my progress and provide useful feedback on any work I have shared with him for my qualifications. However, apart from contact with my learning coach I feel I have not received as much support as expected from the provider as I only have one contact point, and sometimes they have been slow to respond if I've had any queries.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like the teaching of how to use data analysis softwares has been very helpful and applicable to my role, as well as some of the learning material that I was provided with in the training weeks. I feel that some parts of my learning have been forgotten since due to the nature of some of the content being theoretical, which I have not necessarily needed to think about in my day-to-day responsibilites.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are several social opportunities available at the service. I have yet to sign up to a social club yet due to the restrictions regarding the pandemic and lack of time in the office, but I have still been able to attend several team events and interact with other apprentices who I met when I first started.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Financial Ombudsman Service to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great company to work for who care about their staff and like to push you to be your best without wanting to overwork you. They stick to their key values and encourage their staff to focus on keeping a good work-life balance, and everyone I have met at the company has always been very friendly and welcoming.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Financial Ombudsman Service?
  • I would suggest to do your research about the company before applying so you understand what the organisation is about. I would also take time to read about the job description to ensure it suits exactly what you want to do, as the job description for my role matches up very well to the work I do on a daily basis.
