  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Within my role I help oversee the running of the store, including all operations, ensuring the team are delivering all KPIs and targets, controlling the profit lines and also managing the team. I also help cover the store in the absence of my store manager, and help with managing a team of 60 employees

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout my time in completing the Degree Apprenticeship with De Montfort University and KFC, I have learnt a plethora of skills and abilities which I can utilise to improve how I lead and manage my team, and how I help run the business. I have improved upon my existing skills such as communication and delegation, and also learnt new theories and models which have improved these skills to a higher standard

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my Degree Apprenticeship as it provides me with the chance to earn whilst I learn and finish with a degree at the end of the four years. I chose not to attend university the traditional way alike my peers, due to enjoying my work and enjoying earning money. This provides me the option to do both and further my skill set more as a manager in a business and field which I love and enjoy

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has a good structure as it ensures the modules all follow on from each other. For example the first year was communication and personal development, which then led on to managing teams and organisations. The study sessions are always executed to a high standard and there is a good structure to the days to ensure we learn everything in the short space of time

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I always receive the upmost support from my employer, ranging from my line manager and mentor, to the ASL team and the HR team. They always ask how I am doing and if I need any help or support, and our franchise always allows me the time to learn and complete my OTJ hours

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • De Montfort University has helped me through the degree apprenticeship by ensuring we have structured study sessions each time we go, with the option to attend training sessions on OneFile for our portfolio work. There are regular reviews where the assessor team are very helpful and the programme leaders have taken feedback on board well, especially this past year and have learnt from previous weaknesses

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • By studying and completing this degree apprenticeship, I have learnt a whole range of knowledge, skills and behaviours which I can implement within my workplace. For example, my leadership skills have grown and my confidence around the financial side of the business has grown. I have a more in depth understanding around the business and feel as though I am not at a disadvantage anymore when attending meetings because I now have a stronger knowledge

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Whilst there aren’t really any extra curricular activities which work provides for us, there are professional networking sessions such as ER training and HeartStyles which help me to branch out and meet others from other restaurants. University alone provides me a great opportunity to meet others in my business as well as within other industries and further my knowledge

  • KFC have supported me since I was 16 years old and recruited as a Team Member, and helped me climb to Assistant Manager by the age of 19. I would highly recommend the business to anyone looking to work their way up and who are passionate for working in customer service and hospitality
