  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role is to supervise, run shifts and oversee the venue. On a day to day basis, I assign team members to specific job roles, ensure daily tasks are being done such as toilet checks, monitor the guests to ensure everyone seems happy, and in the event they aren't, take the necessary measures to ensure they leave happy. I atmosphere manage, via lights, music, sound. I monitor the kitchen team, ensure they are happy, they are coping, plates are coming out at high standards.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed multitasking skills which allows me (for example) to make drinks at the bar, but monitor the floor, or to help a a team member with any problems they may have. I am able to diffuse situations of conflict, a new skill I have acquired. I have developed my communication skills further, via face to face communication and over email/written communication. I have developed leadership skills, able to lead by example, or direct team members to where I need them to be or what to do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. The course itself is broken down into units and then further into subsections. It's very well signposted so you always know what section you are working on. The lifetime portal allows you to upload work and choose what unit it relates to as well as what skills and section of the mark sheet it relates to so you know you are achieving everything you need to. Meetings are regular and frequent and you are given a breakdown at the beginning of when you can expect to do select things.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I achieve a lot of support from my employer and manager. We are given time to complete the work and my employer actively encourages dedicating the time to completing the programme. When I mentioned I wanted to continue with the next level (from 3 to 4) there was no hesitation in putting me forward.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Lifetime are fantastic and provide a lot of support. If I need help, I am able to call or message my tutor and Neil gets in touch as soon as he can. We have frequent meetings during which he really pushes me further to explore the unit. He encourages all conversations and will take time to discuss anything in extra depth. I feel incredibly supported.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel I learn more about the business side through the programme and more skills which I can take to use to work. For example, I have learnt how to hone my communication skills through learning about the different ways you can communicate on the programme. I think the programme teaches skills and information which is easily adaptable to work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a number of extra curricular activities. Recently we had apprentice appreciation week which had celebrations, and an upcoming trip to London. We also get golden tickets which we are then able to spend on team nights out. We have access to a discount programme which gets discounted tickets to do different activities like going to the cinema.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mitchells & Butlers to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company are brilliant to work for: there are a number of employee benefits which add extra to the role, there are plenty of opportunities for development and promotion. I love the job role itself; working with guests and making them happy and running a team are both incredibly satisfying. The company provides support for mental health amongst other illnesses.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitchells & Butlers?
  • Research the company beforehand: it can be incredibly beneficial to know about the brands and the different restaurants and bars and then apply to the one that you feel will.benefit you accordingly. The work can be really different between Miller and Carter and O'Neills. Also go in prepared to sell and work hard: it's a very fun and benefiting industry and company to work in, but it does require hard work.
