  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day-to-day basis, we facilitate and support apprentices in their Level 3 Laboratory technician science apprenticeships. We carry out observations, discussions and set assignment work to enable our learners to meet the required criteria for knowledge skills and behaviours of their apprenticeship. We engage with the workplace to ensure they are being fully mentored and supported, mark the apprentices work and set learning plans for them. We also develop specialist knowledge content for what apprentices should be being taught.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am developing teaching skills with Crosby in order for me to support and teach my apprentices better. I am understanding how to utilise more techniques in teaching and use interactive platforms to help me with this. Being on an apprenticeship allows training on the job in both skills and knowledge and really will strengthen my career.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme at the moment. The workload is a fair amount but this is managed through good organisation and communication between myself, my tutor and my mentor. We have had some good workshops, had the opportunity to work with our peers online teaching and have a residential to look forward too which will help us develop some more of the interpersonal skills required in teaching.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured. I am studying the level 5 learning and skills teacher apprenticeship and I believe it is early on in the programme development - although this has not had a massive impact on my ability to continue on with the apprenticeship - just some content is still being developed. This organisation is fair and requirements are made clear.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive as much support as is required. I have regular bi-weekly check-ins with mentors within my workplace to see if I need assistance or support with any of the elements in my role or my apprenticeship work. I am able to request anything further I made need from my employer and there has never been a time I have felt unsupported.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I received as much support as is required. I have regular check-ins with my tutor at my training provider and additional meetings when I require that bit of extra support. I have asked for further support due to ALN's and had meetings arranged and have been directed to resources to help support me further. I have never felt unsupported by Crosby and really appreciate the support I do get.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have a good background in my area of teaching, although I do not have the teaching skills or knowledge to pass this onto my apprentices. By carrying out an apprenticeship I am able to learn whilst carrying out the job and gain my qualification at the same time. It enables me to teach my apprentices better and ensure they are learning in a healthy and supportive environment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have many presentations, workplace competitions and extracurricular events taking place. We will be having team meet-ups when we are able to (as we work remotely) and we have some planning in the pipeline for some walking/hiking outdoor events to do in teams. We are encouraged to be a close-knit team and encouraged to support our CPD.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Youthforce to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have finally found a position in which I feel I make a difference within my industry. I am able to help support others achieve their further education qualifications in STEM and see the apprentices develop over a 2 year period; at the start of their careers. I love the close team we have and really think I have a healthy and positive career ahead of me with Youthforce.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Youthforce?
  • Apply! I thought I wouldn't even be looked at with my experience and qualifications but I was offered an interview and I was so grateful - and here I am. Being honest with who you are and what you have done really helps to show the good qualities in someone. No one is expected to know everything! Finally, being friendly and personable really helps. We want to see how you will fit as one of the team. If you have a sense of humour or are a bit quirky - show it. Diversity is something to be celebrated.
