  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an assistant manager that leads a team of around 25 people. My daily role includes making sure we are well prepped for service, leading the service and dealing with any complaints. It also includes stock taking, ordering, money handling and customer service. Alongside these things I have a strong rapport with both guests and our staff and feel it's important to be able to communicate clearly to both. It is a very enjoyable job which I love.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed the skills I have learnt along my career and have learnt new skills by working towards my level 4 apprenticeship. My people and communication skills have improved and grown along with my confidence and ability to lead a team whilst delivering excellent customer service. I feel that my organisational skills have also grown as I have had to juggle both working shifts and doing my coursework with staff issues and a pandemic along the way!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the programme so far , even though it got off to a rocky start due to covid 19. I have had three different assessors due to this but feel I am on track and have the knowledge and support to complete the programme successfully. I feel all the assessors are helpful and great at guiding you if you are unsure , they are always at hand either via email, message or a phone call.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Now I am in the swing of the programme i feel it is well organised , however it was a tough start to get signed up and to get started due to the current pandemic. Now I am well on my way and find that the layout of the platforms used easy to use and informative. It is easy to see where I am.with my workload and what other work needs to be done for completion

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel the original sign up was somewhat confusing, however since this I feel that the pandemic has caused my employer not to be at hand as much as they would be if we were in a normal situation. It's more difficult to get modules signed off from my manager as we are on furlough as well as talking through what I am learning and putting things Into practice as well as everything being theory based.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • So far I have had three training providers whilst being on the course. Each of the providers had great knowledge of what I am learning and were friendly and approachable. They all made it clear that they were at hand if I have any issues outside our visits and gave me ways in which I can contact them. Unfortunately I have not been able to have a face to face visit yet due to restrictions but all theory based work is always discussed thoroughly on our sessions.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification makes me think about everything from all different angles and also more deeply. It has taught me so far that there are many ways to achieve the end goal and that there can be factors out of your control that change the way you may have to do things. I also feel that hands on experience enhances how I complete my course as first hand experience is relatable to the modules on paper.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We are quite as small business so do not have any extra curricular activities to get involved with as a team,. We do however have a staff day out once a year and several team meetings with a night out after for the team to bond in a more relaxed environment. Over the furlough period there has been a quiz on our work facebook page and we have our own team page to communicate through via Facebook.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a fantastic company to work for. There are great benefits such as pension, share schemes, pick a perk, cycle to work. Fabulous training and support is given to new starters and there are plenty of avenues for you to progress whether that be within your own brand or one of the other brands. There are plenty of support pages on Facebook regarding pay, mental health, training, hours and pretty much anything you may need to ask for.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitchells & Butlers?
  • Be yourself. If you are looking for a good stable career with plenty of opportunity then apply. If you are a student who needs a part time job, still apply, you never know where you may end up in a year or five years time. They are fair, plenty of support is available and you really feel like a valued part of the team. There are so many opportunities to move up the ladder and in different areas of the business
