  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Senior Risk and Compliance Coordinator which involves coordination and management of the risk and compliance functions and requirements within indoor operations. I liaise with the Senior Management Team and ensure that audit actions are addressed efficiently, I write reports for the board of directors including a detail account of operations and I pull together risk information and present to various groups each month. I have a large involvement in incident management at the AA and work closely with the Health and Safety teams.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the apprenticeship part of the course I have expanded my knowledge around skills around behaviours such as developing myself and others, communicating and influencing, delivering services, team work and customers and products. The Diploma part of the course is through the International Compliance Association (which I haven't started yet) but I am expecting to learn the most about Risk and Compliance through that section of the apprenticeship. I have learnt how to evidence behaviours that I already show in the workplace through professional discussions, witness statements and reflective journals.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy learning, I enjoy applying what I already know to scenarios and questions given. The course has been offered remotely through the COVID pandemic and I have enjoyed being able to learn at my own pace and assign time in my calendar to complete assignments. The tutors are knowledgeable, friendly and conduct remote classes brilliantly. The platform that is used is great for being able to carry out 'classroom' activities virtually.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The timetable for the course is sent out prior to the start date and details every 'dial in' coaching course and all the deadlines for assignments. Through this I have been able to plan how I will complete the work required over the 2 year course. The workload is split into clear assignment questions that cover all required learning outcomes. I think BPP have structured the course brilliantly, allowing learning outcomes to be evidenced by one piece of evidence where possible.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer fully supports completion of the course. I am lucky that I have the freedom to plan my own time, therefore allowing me to plan my own workload around the commitments of the course. Had the course been carried out in the classroom, I would have been fully supported to attend those sessions. Due to COVID19 restrictions the course is completed virtually and I do this from the comfort of my home. My line manager supports by attending my 121 sessions where required.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have been assigned a tutor, who marks my assignments and provides feedback. His role is to support the successful completion of all assignments and provides push points to push towards a distinction level. I have contacted him a few times already for advice and he's always happy to help! We have other tutors with various backgrounds and experience to complete the coaching/tutorial sessions and they are very knowledgeable and conduct the classes in a way that gets everyone involved.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The apprenticeship part of the program is helping me to become a better leader. It helps me recognise what I already do well and where my development areas are. The tutors have a wealth of knowledge around theories and models that is passed on through coaching sessions and this helps me think about things in a more effective way. The Risk and Compliance diploma section of the course will give me the technical knowledge that will allow me to advance in the Risk and Compliance area.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Any social activities or professional networking events are limited due to COIVD19 restrictions at the moment. This is balanced through BPP Facebook pages, Teams sites, webpages etc. where we can interact with other apprentices. During group tutorials, I am encouraged to interact with the other apprentices throughout the session to share ideas and experiences. I don't feel that the course is lacking in a social element due to the effort put in by the course leader and everyone that attends.

  • 9a. Would you recommend The AA to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The AA is a company that will support you in whatever you want to do. If you work hard, show initiative and are willing to learn you will always do well. I have worked for the AA for 10 years and have progressed massively during that time. I have always tried my hardest, shown willing to take extra responsibility and over time have found where my interests lie and which area I wanted to progress within. My manager has supported me throughout the process and has allowed me to progress to a job that I love!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to The AA?
  • Work hard, strive to be the best at whatever you are doing. Always be willing to take on extra responsibilities and showcase your potential.
