  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to take on small projects in the business related to stock and inventory management around the country. On a day-to-day basis I will email the relevant people to receive updates on projects, organise meetings, create progress trackers and speak with my team on my progress. I often speak with my manager at the end of the week to see how I am getting on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have improved my confidence by speaking with people and getting out of my shell which is a big positive. I have also improved my organisational skills by creating progress sheets on the daily to ensure that objectives are being met. I have developed my presenting skills by presenting to many people in the company.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme was one of the first degree apprenticeships around and was not clearly organised as to what I would be doing in the workplace. Its enjoyable when there's tasks to do and when people are co-operative but there are times when the days get quiet. As, you get further into the programme, there will be more things to keep you busy.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As it was new to the company, the future was not clear in to what work I would be doing. There was also a restructuring as I joined meaning my job role changed. However, the university is great and the company usually books my accommodation in advance for me. I think that the university helps with the structure but there could be more communication.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is great and is always willing to spend time with me. They are very down to earth and has lots of experience. My manager is quite busy which means communication can sometimes be lacking but on the whole I receive good support from my employer, even though they are often in demand.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • lots of it. My tutors are always ready to provide support and respond to emails really quickly. we also have reviews which happen which ensure we are on track. Leeds Trinity University is really helpful and they really like to keep in touch and are always ready to answer your queries

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • By learning off the job, you can perform better at work through the use of new models, theories and ranged perspectives to see different attitudes to situations, enabling you to become more knowledgeable in your field. If I did not be studying this qualification, I would have less of an understanding in my job role and would be less effective

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is Workplace, where anyone in the business can post special events. there are things to do such as the challenge cup which anyone can compete in to win investment for an idea to improve BT. There could be more for BT Ventures, however, on the whole, there are good activities for apprentices such as learning days where we meet up with other apprentices and have a workshop on a topic relevant to our roles.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a good place to work. There's lots going on and in most cases, people will help you. Its never being an apprentice as there's so much to learn but working here makes that easier. BT has great values and they live by them; they are really ethically and morally positive and fair

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Just be yourself, make sure you know what BT is, what we do and our values. If you get a role in the business, don't forget that there is wide opportunity to move around the company if you feel that you're not suited to your role. No one bites and the assessment day is actually really interesting as well as challenging.
