  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Every 6 months I start a new rotation in the team of my choice. Currently I am in content operations which looks after all of the content that goes on the BT TV box. I am buddied up when learning about a new role and then after I am comfortable I do the role like a normal employee. I also have apprentice responsibilities where I write and coordinate a monthly blog that goes out and I am also responsible for making videos. Additionally I help host visits at the BT tower and attend lots of career fairs, as well as work with STEM.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my presentation skills as well as video editing skills. Operationally I have learnt lots for example how to use specific software to quality control incoming files and how to check for different errors. I have also learnt how to transcode files and my overall technical knowlegde is widening every day. My confidence has grown a lot through public speaking as well.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I think the program is great, so many opportunities come my way to get involved with schools, volunteering and other experiences such as seeing Gary Barlow perform as part of a 8K test. I am really supported in my role and feel like I can ask anyone for help. I also have a lot of control over my apprenticeship which I think is really beneficial.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is structured well. Every 6 weeks roughly, I attend university as part of my degree. The course is structured so the learning supports my day to day work. My operational team also has a set of guidelines for me to meet in my 6 month rotation therefore I am always learning something new.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support. I have monthly 1:1 with my manager and have a apprentice team meeting every week to make sure we are all on track and if we have any issues we can raise them. Alongside this we also have a separate meeting away from managers to discuss any other issues which is then fed back anonymously.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot of the learning is self led due to the fact there isn’t a lot of time and there is a lot of content to cover. Despite this if I had any concerns or needed extra help I feel I could easily go to the university for help or my fellow apprentices.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think my degree massively helps me in my role. The fact the degree was developed with people that work for BT mean that everything I learn is directly related to my role or BT as a company, and the industry it is in. I gain all the knowledge and more to help me in my role and future career paths.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are loads! I am constantly going out to careers fairs or helping with workshops such as doing mock interviews with year 11 students. We also have a lot of external visits to companies such as sky and Coca Cola to see how they work and fit into the technology industry. We are also encouraged to work closely with organisations such as STEM and barefoot to help future generations consider a STEM career.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunities on offer are so unique and BT wants to push all of their apprentices to be the best they can be. You can also have multiple careers within BT and if you ever are interested in a different area BT would support you in any way they can. The company really looks after their employees and always encourage development.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • You don’t necessarily need previous experience but the one think You do need is a drive and passion for learning. If you can show that you are hard working and willing to put in the effort to succeed in a role then BT will be the place for you.
