  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Shadowing train maintenance staff across London Underground depots. Whilst shadowing maintenance activities you are also required to collate evidence for a level 3 NVQ and then subsequently write this up. during the first year you must complete a three stage workshop course and also attend block release to collage to complete a level 3 BTEC.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed existing hand tool and general maintenance skills throughout the duration of the course. On top of this I have also learned how to work on rolling stock systems including traction, doors, brakes and propulsion systems. During the first year I was also able to gain valuable welding and electronic skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the apprentice programme and everything that it brought. I enjoyed the variety of moving around all maintenance depots and meeting many people from all walks of life who aided me in the completion of my NVQ. I also enjoyed being with other apprentices and working together to meet our targets.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The scheme is structured so that each year you progress respectively and your learning becomes more refined to your job role as the scheme progresses. The different years vary in the style of learning, the jobs you do and the way you are assessed to ensure you are progressing as required.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As an apprentice you are given a dedicated apprentice support manager who is your go to contact and also a coach who helps you with your vocational requirements. Any additional support is given upon request and as you progress through your scheme you will meet multiple members of staff who are happy to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As an apprentice you are given a dedicated trainer who helps you with your qualifications. The trainer will also assess all coursework and provide specific feedback and further support to you as and when it is required. During collage time every tutor is available for additional support whenever they are required.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The NVQ is tailored specifically to the role you are training to pass out into so all of the experience and knowledge you gain throughout the apprenticeship are directly relevant when you pass out. In some area the qualification goes above and beyond and provides insight into certain areas you may not even have to experience.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • TFL have an extensive social network that runs throughout the entirety of the business and this includes all sectors. This involves social and sporting clubs of every kind as well as employee communications programmes. There are also opportunities to attend external corporate events and promote the apprenticeship to other people.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • TFL is a great company that offers its employees many opportunities to progress and get involved with company events. The apprenticeship scheme is a time tested model that allows people to rapidly progress and make the most of their time at work. Apprentices are encouraged to progress and be the best they can.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Be open, honest and direct. read the job description properly and think about how you can apply your skills to the role. Be sure to include all relevant information and be open to travelling around London. Be ready to demonstrate basic maths and English skills and be confident throughout the application.
