  • Move around different placements and teams to get a wide range of experience from transport analysis (e.g. modelling, statistic), basic office skills (e.g. emails, meetings, minutes), Working on big projects such as HS2. Building stakeholder relationships internally and externally.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Communication is a big one - experience in talking to a range of people, presenting to large and small groups, chairing meetings, responding to politically sensitive queries. Engineering skills such as assessing traffic management plans, analysing impacts of construction works on certain modes. GIS skills. Project Management courses.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Working in numerous teams and departments means you get some experience in all different types of the industry so you can see which area you want to start a career in & then get to meet a lot of different people & build relationships.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Structure of the programme could be improved e.g. if you could choose your own placements rather than get placed somewhere random. Lots of training and support from a variety of people & time allowed to study for college and work on end point assessment.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Variety of support from line manager, placement manager, apprentice buddy, apprentice sponsor, immediate team currently working in, other apprentices, college tutors, work assessors & HR.

  • Lots of support over the years I never had any issues.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It provided me with a general overview of transport planning... although TfL is unique and some processes are different. But it allowed me to understand all processes so if I wanted to move to a different organisation then I could.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Always lots of social events whether in your immediate team, project team or even with other apprentices. Access to lots of networking events through CIHT or Urban Deisgn courses. Monthly forums within the company

  • 9a. Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Friendly, flexible and relaxed working environment. Organisation puts a lot of trust and support into their employees. Good benefits. Can see what you are doing/working on out on the streets and the benefits it brings so can be very rewarding.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • research current projects ongoing at TfL and the latest news to mention in your interview. Be eager and keen to learn and develop your skills. Answer in the STAR format. Dress formally for interviews or assessment days. Relax and be yourself. Ask question during interview.
