  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently studying full time at James Watt College as i am in my first year. This involves practical units and BTEC (theory) subjects. Practical units include turning, milling, bench fitting, electrical wiring, electrical maintenance, mechanical maintenance, fluid power assembly and maintenance and plc programming. For each unit, 2 assessments must be completed and a set of under-pinning knowledge questions. Assignments must be completed for BTEC subjects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I had previously done milling and turning, however, the machines were very basic and didn't even have gears. I have also covered some topics covered in BTEC, such as magnetism, at GCSE level in core subjects. I had never done electrical, fluid power or plc work previous to this apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as I enjoy learning new skills and broadening my knowledge. It allows me to better my practical skills in numerous fields but also to improve my theory. However, I am eager to learn in a factory environment and get hands on in placements that i might end up in for my final job role. I will be doing so next academic year.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured. I am notified on how much time i have to complete a unit, assignment or assessment. I know all units that need to be completed. I have access to applications such as moodle where i can visit to obtain educational aids and important information. Assignments are often put on moodle.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support can be acquired when necessary but isn't always immediate. Due to the fact that i am currently at college full time, communication is often achieved through the means of email. This means that there is a waiting time for a response. Support is provided to a good degree.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot of support is provided from college staff. Lecturers are easily to get a hold of and are willing to provide support required. Our supervisors are made clear and we know who to go to if we have any issues. The lecturers are fair and allocate enough time for units/assignments to be completed. They also push you to improve.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • This question is tough to answer as i am currently at college full time. However, I believe the qualification will be beneficial to my performance in my future placements as it installs basic knowledge and safe working practices in me. This will allow me to have an understanding of how different processes work in the factory environment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am not aware of many extra-curricular activities organised by the company as i am fairly new to the company and am away from the workplace. I know that there are football events that take place for charity and days are provided for employee's to bring their families to work and partake in activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend this apprenticeship to friends as it allows you to obtain qualifications whilst also gaining hands on, practical experience. You are paid a wage and get benefits from the company such as discounts and a car scheme. Degree apprenticeships are also offered so you can attend university and not have to pay for the education as the company does that for you. They invest in you.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • I would just notify potential applicants of the process. You must first apply, giving details of qualifications and past experience. If you pass this stage, you must complete a maths, english and engineering online test. If you impress you will then be asked to attend an assessment day, where you will partake in group activities, complete further tests and have an interview with the employer.
