  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an assistant manager at KFC I run shifts on a daily basis, generally four days a week. On my fifth day I have an admin day where I look into certain aspects of the restaurant which may be struggling and how to better this, or areas we simply are not getting the best out of. I complete staff rotas, forecasting, food orders, stock counts, bankings, team training, HR issues, coaching, ER issues and so on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through my career at KFC which is my only job, I have learnt how to become a leader, not a manager, and how to help your team thrive to get the best out of what you do. Through completing the apprenticeship I have touched on how to take this further, and taking a step back to look at why we do things how we do and the outcome it has on the business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme a lot. It is well linked with the job, due to my tutor being a previous employee of KFC, which makes it easy to understand different topics and put them in to perspective with a day to day basis at KFC. Great step to the next stage.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. Appointments used to feel rushed due to the sheer amount of candidates and distance that my tutor had to cover but with others on the same course, my tutor came up with the idea of doing a class room scenario every 4 weeks which works very well, especially how you are with others doing the same thing.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive very little support from my employer for the apprenticeship. I cannot praise lifetime training enough but with the time we’re meant to have inside work to complete apprenticeship work does not exist. Neither does the attention from those above store leaders on the course or how it is going. It’s as if they’ve paid life time to take over the responsibility of apprenticeships and now they don’t care about it as it’s nothing to do with them.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As said above I cannot praise life time training enough in support and help. They do what they can do base the qualification to the individuals job and job role, and also how the individual operates, understanding everyone’s strengths and weaknesses to create a basis for how to go about things.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As mentioned in earlier questions I feel I have learnt a lot just from my job and employer, but the qualification and provider helps understand why, how and what we do. On a day to day basis we just do it, but understanding things and sitting back looking at things help you understand yourself and your doings.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Absolutely not. KFC used to be a buzzing place with plenty of extra social activities, people who cared a lot about their employees and a general happy place. That has faded very vigorously over the last year or so since being franchised off, and the important people feel that KFC used to have has completely disappeared.

  • 9a. Would you recommend KFC UK & I to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • They do not care about employees happiness or needs, career drives or ambitions. Individuals do not matter any more it’s all about profit and numbers, no kind of personal feel at all. It’s not a happy place to be and that’s the way everyone feels, reflected in the way all management is leaving.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KFC UK & I?
  • Don’t do it. As said above it’s not a thriving business like it used to be. Soon the business will slowly fall apart. Due to the reasons mentioned already a lot of experienced and high performing managers have left, who they are trying to replace with external managers that will be rushed through their training to be put in place, whilst not knowing what they’re doing.
