  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I complete tax returns for corporate companies on a day to day basis. I analyze the accounts and other financial statements to generate the comp using the internal sources. I also complete a lot of admin work, for instance creating tax packs, and data handling. On top of this, we sometimes attend college or work from home as self study.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills since starting at PwC. This is mostly regarding how to operate the internal systems to develop a tax return, how to analyse data such as trial balances, tax packs and accounts. There is a lot of new accounting vocabulary I have learnt which is necessary for my progression.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme as a whole is good, I like the fact we get self study days to complete our college work even though it is intense. The work itself is good too, but it's been difficult to come from no knowledge on the area as we have struggled for work to begin with.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At the beginning, we attended training courses and opening events to get to know the firm and the people we will be working with, but I don't feel like we've had much training on how to complete our actual job. We are attending training at the moment which will end in the summer, but this would have been useful to learn when we first started.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is always someone who is willing to help you with the work. They are understanding when you have exams coming up and always offer you to take holiday days leading to exams if you feel that is necessary. We were given a 'buddy' when we first joined who is there to help us with any queries we have on the work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There is support available, for instance we can email them if we have any queries, however we are told to not expect a reply for a few days. We only go to college for one of the exams, the rest are self study. I think it would be useful to attend college more so you have someone to teach you through the work and be readily available for any queries.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the accounting exam has been especially useful so far. This has helped me understand new terminology, and the process of the financial information. I feel more comfortable now at completing tax computations and analysing data such as trial balances, cash flows and accounts. I haven't completed many other exams at the moment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra-curricular activities we can get involved in with work. We regularly get emails informing us of new sports activities/competitions we can attend. I am a member of the social club, where at the end of each month they announce we can get 2 complimentary drinks at a venue of their choice.

  • 9a. Would you recommend PwC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a friendly and professional environment which gives you a great head start to your career. You have to put in a lot of work with completing your qualification on top of your workload, but PwC are very supportive and help you if needed. It's interesting to work in such a big company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to PwC?
  • No one expects you to know what to do when you first join, so take on everything as you go along. You are not expected to know what everything means or how to complete a tax comp, it's a learn in progress which PwC guide you through. Take on every opportunity you can here.
