  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I would arrive in the morning at around 9 am at the meeting place and start the day off at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. From there onwards I would shadow a cardiothorathic consultant surgeon until 3:30.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My observation skills development as they were put to test throughput the day from one operation theater to the other. Moreover my communication skills improved by talking to professionals and patients alike.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed my programme a fair bit however due to the professional experience and knowledge required for this job I was unable to do any more than shadowing. It was still a great experience full of great people.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NHS?
  • I was treated well throughout the work experience however feel not as valued by the cconsultant surgeon i was shadowing. I do undersdant the responsibilities they had but would have appreciated more welcoming and a better farewell. Everyone else were very kind.

  • Full days running around from one department to another.

  • They did explain a lot through operations however they didn't give a proper farewell or wrote a review.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • People from different departments were very kind specially younger doctors doing practice.

  • I received no payment.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • This work experience was organised by my school. It did provide great work experience if I had followed the medicine university path.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Not many people are able to witness lung and open heart surgeries!


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
  • Talk as much as you can with professionals and don't be afraid to ask all the questions you have !
