  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job is primary installing smart meters, gas and electric. Some of my work is installing dumb meters and also repairing prepay meters. Day consists of driving to customer address and installing meter, registering meter on British Gas computer system. Checking gas appliances and electrical system for safety. Giving energy efficiency advice.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I'm now gas safe registered and have electrical qualifications too. However I feel that the training was rushed and only gave you the basic info to pass exams.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my apprenticeship, I do lots of overtime. I'm consistently one of the top performers in my team and tell everyone how much I love my job.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Centrica?
  • I've worked for British Gas for 9 years, but have recently joined the apprenticeship programme. I have seen 3 major rounds of redundancies in this time.

    3/10

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Pretty badly organised. Job offer included certain qualifications that I would gain, first day of the course trainer said the course had changed - no one in charge knew the correct qualifications.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

    9/10

  • Same answer as above. Trainer and employer are the same entity. Nine out of ten.

    9/10

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Base salary could be more generous due to the amount of responsibility the role involves. Lots of earning potential though, good quarterly bonus scheme.

    9/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities to progress which are emailed to all employees. Smart meter installation is like the gold rush at the moment so there are lots of other companies to join.

    7/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Centrica to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Even though they make a lot of redundancies, it's still a good place to work. The money and benefits are good and it's a well respected company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Centrica?
  • Research the role you're applying for. Prepare interview question examples around the STAR format and research the companies visions and values.
