  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Smart metering. It involves fitting smart meters day to day around 3 duals a day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt everything that I need to know for the job. I had already been taught how to do pipe work and some basic electrics but I got taught all the gas side of the job at the college

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It's okay. I would say I'm a great live of it. The academy for me felt rushed at times and then too relaxed at other times. For example, Friday was always a waste of time in the academy. It was the day where you just swept the floors or painted the walls so that the staff didn't have to do it. It was also half a day so was pointless for me to drive an hour and a half for it

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Centrica?
  • I don't feel valued. Firstly. We don't get payed enough for supposedly being the best at what we do. We are pushed to our physical limits which tests your mental limits too. The job gets stressful when all you're reminded about is productivity which you have to hit otherwise you won't get a bonus.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program seemed to be a self learning environment. They provide the tools for us to learn and then it's up to us to teach ourselves. Which for me is a good way to learn. Others not so much. I liked it. The academy structure seemed to be all over the place. No structure in lessons or the topics for the week

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Now that I am out of the academy I don't receive any help. But in the academy it was always there if you needed it. I have to say my tutor was really amazing. He would stay till midnight if he could to help us. Genuinely amazing man

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is good at what he does. It is hard to talk to him when you need it as he's always so busy

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Like I said. We don't get payed enough when we are out of the academy. Especially that we are doing a role as if we have fully trained and are expected to meet productivity targets like the guys that ave been there for 5 years when we are only 5 months into the experience. The pay only goes up in may and that seems too long for doing a job that others get payed for

    2/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Not really. There are no social events. No way of meeting the team other than a monthly team meeting

    4/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Centrica to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a hard one. I feel like I'd recommend it mainly down to the fact you can wake up every morning and you would know you have work. Also the academy was probably the best role of my life to day. It was fun. Stressful at times. It was sociable also. But the role isn't something I'd recommend. It's hard. The stress and the worry of missing something also. But I think knowing you have work everyday is a bonus

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Centrica?
  • Be yourself. Don't let the job stress you out if you can. If you are successful then try in the academy. Don't let the social aspect be the only thing you focus on. Do the work too.
