Guide to Civil Service Apprenticeships

The civil service describes anything that the government is responsible for. Big things like collecting taxes (HMRC) to the little things like mystery shopping for hard cheese…

Guide to Civil Service Apprenticeships

The Civil Service plays a vital role in society, kind of like fridges do.

If it wasn’t for the Civil Service, there would be no public services. If there were no fridges, there would be no fresh food! And that means no salmon and cream cheese bagels. Like your fridge, The Civil Service is invaluable.

Without it there would be no one to work in our prisons, sort out our benefit schemes, or even issue driving licences… the list is almost endless!

As a civil servant, you’ll have the power to help make social, environmental and economic changes to your community.

This guide maps out what kind of civil service apprenticeships there are and where to find them. So if you want to know more about what kind of civil service apprenticeships are out there just keep reading...

What is the Civil Service?

So, the short answer is… Civil servants support the government by helping develop and implement its policies.

However, there’s much more to it than that. The Civil Service employs around 420,000 people across a huge variety of roles. You could be a vet, marine biologist or web developer and still be employed by the Civil Service.

“So, how can I get a piece of the action?”

The government offers apprenticeships sporadically throughout the year - as and when they need apprentices. Keep an eye out for vacancies on their website.

What you might not know is that they also offer a ‘Fast Track’ scheme. This scheme didn’t take place in 2019 but the government is currently planning for their 2020 relaunch of the scheme. For updates on the Fast Track Apprenticeship 2020 scheme, check out their website.

Are civil servants only based in London?

It is often assumed that all of the careers in the Civil Service are based in London - as this is where Boris is based.

However, 80% of Civil Service jobs are based outside of London as they are needed all over the UK. You’ll find opportunities across the country; from Bristol to Glasgow.

Money, money, money!

We’re not stupid. We know that money plays a huge part when you’re choosing a career.

Well… GOOD NEWS! The apprenticeship wage for civil servants is higher than most other apprenticeships.

  • If you are based outside of London, the MINIMUM salary will be a whopping £19,500.

  • If you take an apprenticeship in London, the MINIMUM salary is a heart-stopping £22,000.

  • The MAXIMUM salary is currently £27,000!
