Higher Level Apprenticeship

What attracted you to BlackRock’s Apprenticeship programme?

Coming from a background where neither of my parents attended university, there was a distinct pressure NOT to follow in their footsteps and to pursue further education. However, my preference has always leaned towards a more hands-on approach, and I wanted to immerse myself in the working world. I was always taught the importance of education, so I sought out ways I could do both. An apprenticeship seemed the perfect marriage of these two worlds. With my skills in acquisition and my development style I was fascinated with the idea of an Apprenticeship and securing a spot at BlackRock only exceeded my wildest dreams, offering me an unparalleled opportunity for growth and development in a felid with endless opportunities.

What is your day-to-day role in your team?

On the equity trading desk – my day-to-day activities, just the like the market, are somewhat fluctuant and often contingent. They involve deciphering market movements and delving into the intricacies that drive them, collating information to build analysis on sentiment from the street to the performance of individual names. And, of course, I spend a portion of my day on Investopedia trying to understand what the jargon means!

What has been a highlight of your time at BlackRock so far?

A standout moment during my time at BlackRock thus far has been my involvement in the 'Who's on 2' event. This initiative aimed to unite the colleagues and functions across floor 2, starting with informative, interactive presentations by each team and finished with a classic BlackRock food and drinks social. The enjoyment I had in decorating and planning for the event, coupled with witnessing its tremendous success, proved exceptionally fulfilling and was undoubtedly the highlight of my experience thus far.

How have you been supported by your fellow Apprentices and buddies/mentors?

I am fortunate to have a genuine support system at BlackRock. I truly feel embraced, particularly within the tightly knit and supportive Fundamental Equity team. Their mentorship has played a pivotal role in kindling my passion for the markets, with their openness to address even my most witless questions. Everyone is always free for a coffee to offer advice when things don’t seem so clear.

How are you finding balancing your study requirements along with the role?

Balancing study requirements with work is undoubtedly challenging, especially during high-pressure periods. I found dedicating set study time and ensuring timely completion of my assignments really helps managing workload. In my role practical application of the theoretical knowledge allows you to consolidate topics covered and has proven invaluable for my learning.

Would you recommend BlackRock’s Apprenticeship scheme to someone thinking about an alternative route into finance?

For those seeking an alternative route into Financial Services, I wholeheartedly recommend BlackRock's Apprenticeship scheme. It's a journey where eagerness meets opportunity, providing the tools and environment for personal and professional growth. Surrounded by inspiring role models, you'll find motivation at every turn. The people are incredible, the work is impactful, which makes it a huge YES from me.

What are your interests/hobbies outside of work?

Footy, Food & Fishing – Be it playing, watching, or debating, football is an immutable presence in my life (avidly supporting Arsenal) and takes up most of my free time. Similarly, whether its cooking or dining I’m a big foodie so I indulge in all capacities. Growing up I spent a lot of time fishing abroad, and that passion has stayed with me throughout my adult years.
