  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is a software engineer in Tata Steel Trostre. During a normal day of work, I will typically come in around 8am and finish at 4pm. I am expected to get on with tasks such as creating new web pages or fixing them as well as help other around our site with any software issues they are having on their PCs either in the labs we have or the lines that produce our product.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In my apprenticeship, I have learned many skills such as a new coding language called PHP which is used throughout all the websites we and programs we use. I have also developed my C# skills as well as my HTML skills more as I had a basic idea of both programs but with the apprenticeship I am learning much more.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot, the people I work with are very friendly and good to be around, the things I am being show and trying learn in work is interesting and in university the days are a bit long because of being a part time student but the content there is also enjoyable to learn.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticeship is well structured considering it is the first time my department is doing one in years. I feel in some areas my programme is a little less organised compared to the other 2 apprentices in different departments but due to a small work force of 3 (Including me), sometimes work priority's may get in the way.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • When I need support, both my employers are willing to help me with whatever project I've been set to do by them if I ever get stuck. This is along as they are not busy with work at the time but they both will try to help me whenever they are free.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When working towards my qualification, I have been given support when needed to help my answer a question I have or if I'm stuck on something and I can not figure it out. This is helpful but I have not needed much support off my provider as of yet but I feel the support if needed it would be good.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel my qualification that I am currently on in university is not helping me perform better in my role as of yet, the stuff we are learning currently is useful and interesting but its not relevant to the work I would be carrying out on a day to day basis.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • From what I know or at least in my department, there is no extra curricular activities to get involved in at our work. Its more just you come in to work, work for your shift with a lunch break in-between and that's how it goes for most of the weeks here

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tata Steel to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Tata steel is very willing to support you and your education by paying for stuff such as a university degree which is really nice to have been offered. As well as this, the pay is very good for a level 4 Apprentice but most importantly the people here are nice to be around.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tata Steel?
  • When applying to Tata Steel, I would recommend learning about what your specific Tata steel site does such as at the Trostre site where I work we do tin plating. I would also say its important to have some prior knowledge to give yourself a better understanding of what you are applying for and if you show that to your employer it will give you a better chance of getting employed.
