  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Completing desk based studies, looking at environmental baseline data and potential constraints in the area. Using spreadsheets to manage data and keep track of deliverables. Attending meetings. Making maps using ArcGIS software. Partaking in extracurricular activities such as lunchtime running club and craft club. Being a member of the Early Careers Professionals and Brilliant Neighbours committees. Completing health and safety paperwork, planning and attending site visits.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my interpersonal skills, learning how to communicate professionally and efficiently. Learning how to use ArcGIS, developing my Excel skills and learning how to write formal structured reports.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy it. There is such a breadth of experiences available and everyone I work with is very supportive.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As I am only the second year, it is still in its debugging stage, but the progress since I started is undoubtable and it is clear that both Mott Macdonald and Coventry University are working hard to prioritise apprentices and make the experience as good as it can be.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As an apprentice, Mott Macdonald are very understanding of the fact that I am still learning and people are always willing to help support and give advice. Mott Macdonald also prioritises individual physical and mental health and acknowledges outside commitments with allocated carers leave.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Coventry University are very responsive to all feedback and are always trying to improve the transparency, understanding, and teaching style to suit the apprentices.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have learned a lot about environmental theory and legislation that has helped me to understand what I am assessing at work and how it aligns with helping the wider environment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At Mott Macdonald there are lots of extracurricular activities, such as lunchtime running club, craft club, netball and football. There are also regular sports and social events such as a painting class, yoga, go karting. And there are the big celebrations such as the end of year party and the sports day that includes all offices nationwide.

  • Yes

  • Mott Macdonald is a very friendly place to work and it is a great place to develop and widen your learning. You can move discipline and office within the company and there is such variety of work to do.

  • Be yourself, show your individuality. Demonstrate your passion for the sector work and your drive to learn more. Show that you will get involved with the extracurriculars.
