  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have previously completed a Level 3 or Modern apprenticeship and have seen an increase in my responsibility. I am office based and use a variety of software packages to complete preliminary and detailed design work for large scale Highway projects. I have experience working within Traffic Signs and Road Markings as well as Pavement.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned many new skills and built on my existing skills. I have vastly improved my communication skills and learned new ways to share information and communicate constructive feedback. My practical skills such as my AutoCAD proficiency has been improving with each day. Mott MacDonald has a vast network of mentors that are willing to help develop necessary skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Since starting at Mott MacDonald in August 2019, I have progressed from a Level 3 apprenticeship to a Level 6 Degree apprenticeship. I have enjoyed it a lot from the beginning but 6 months in, the Covid-19 pandemic caused me to work from home everyday after being in the office everyday. I was provided with amazing support in spite of this and enjoyed both aspects of home and office working.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme structure is very well organised and has clear guidance provided to all apprentices and their line managers. My company has staff with specific roles to assist and provide guidance when necessary. I'm always kept well informed through webinars and drop-in calls for all things regarding the apprenticeship. Any information is well circulated through the network.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive more than enough support at Mott MacDonald, and have done from my first day. I am assigned a buddy and various mentors for my academic qualifications and professional qualifications (namely EngTech, IEng). We have a vast network of Early Career Professionals with a lot of opportunities for development.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am provided with adequate support and have been made fully aware of how to get in contact with any issues. Although my first point of contact would be my academic mentor. I have never had to be in touch with my training provider for support. I have two years left of my university course and have passed everything with good marks so far.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have learned good time management skills from my academic qualification but much of the course is not relevant to my role in the Highways division. Much of what I learn is the theory behind what software can design and calculate on your behalf. Although this allows me to deepen my understanding of Civil Engineering.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • In the Glasgow office, we have an excellent Sports & Social Club which regular events during the working day and out with. We have yoga every week as well as various networking events. External events such as ICE networking events are communicated to us and are very well circulated to the appropriate parties.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I really enjoy my work as well as the working culture within the company. Mott MacDonald feels like a close knit, smaller company despite being a large international company. I really feel employees well-being and happiness is prioritised here - we even have a shorter working week than most other Civil Engineering firms. The culture and attitude promoted here is second-to-none.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • Showing initiative and a willingness to learn is very important - many opportunities will present themselves if you put the work in. I have been apart of many amazing projects working with the latest technology with some of the best people in their field. Don't be afraid to ask any questions!
