we would assist in dressing and cleaning patients, assist in feeding and toileting. ensuring that I treat everyone with respect and dignity. escalating any changes in an individuals health and condition. taking blood samples, performing ECGs, and taking patient observations ( blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels, temperature) and much more.
communicating information in a confidential, appropriate and effective manner. taking blood samples, cannulation, performing ECGs. caring for individuals in a safe, dignified, appropriate, respectful and nice manner. i learnt how to be patient with other people, everyone mores at their own pace.
at work, its like no one knew what to do with us, areas made up things as we went along, what we can/can’t do, isn't much support writing assignments, wasn’t given, classes on assignment topic. we were just left to do everything on our own.
some saw us as 'beneath them' and made the working experience stressful and tiring. others helped me to develop most of my skills, I am truly grateful to everyone who has helped and guided me through my journey to become a better and more confident person.
not much. we were left to do all assignments on our own, and no classes are provided to learn about it. however, you do learn a lot in the workplace which you can fit nicely into assignments.
writing the assignments and doing my own research has helped me to understand the ethics and legislations behind what we do in the workplace.
there are you just have to ask or do a simple search on the workplace websites, look at leaflets, posters and boards throughout the workplace.
No
yes and no. this isn't a place for everyone it is physically and emotionally demanding as is any job but you have to be there for your patients, these are peoples lives and illnesses you are dealing with everyday. no two days are the same.
be openminded, respectful, patient, use common sense (its a big help),don't be afraid to ask for help and help others. think about why you really want to work in healthcare and are you prepared to do it and face it evereyday.
